Wow thanks for all that! I’ll run it through my cousin in Australia when she wakes up, as all this puzzling us both. You could well be right. He was still alive when she had Reuben in 1903 but doubt he was father if said Reuben Hood. Don’t think she married either.

Thinking about William Hood, carpenter -

back on page 1, after Erika had found Ivy's baptism with parents William and Emma, I found this, which I'll post again here:

William Hood
in the 1891 England Census
Name: William Hood

William Hood 60 - carpenter
Emma Hood 63
Edward Hood 23

This was clearly not the right couple - too old.

However, looking at the family again, I see (in 1881) there was also a son William. In 1881 he's a builder's apprentice, but in 1891 (when he's in Richmond Union Workhouse for some reason) and in 1901, he's listed as a carpenter:

William Hood
in the 1881 England Census

Relationship to Head: Head
Spouse: Emma Hood
Gender: Male
Where born: Poulshot, Wiltshire, England

By 1901, he's also an officer in the workhouse:

William Hood
in the 1901 England Census

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relation to Head: Officer
Gender: Male
Birth Place: Marlborough, Wiltshire, England

Maybe Emma Jane made his acquaintance in 1892?

Thanks Argyllgran! mystery why they were there then! Too many mysteries in this one! Wonder why she morphed into Evelyn? Also who William Hood Carpenter was, equally Reubens father. Don’t think she married before Joseph Gower . Guess Reuben’s father could have been a Robin Hood. On Reuben Hoods marriage cert to Winifred Daisy Collins he says father Reuben Hood, Engineer, deceased. He was living at 3 Warwick Rd at that time with Evelyn and her husband Joseph Gower. Ivy Hoodand Harry House were also living there on their Marr cert in 1916. Ivy says father William Hood Dec. Farmer.

Yes going up employment ladder - but would have given birth to Ivy Dorothy about 1893/4 (baptised 1894) Maybe her mother looked after Ivy as was visiting Sims family with Thomas and Emily (nee Bristol) in Reading 1901. Looking promising. Thanks for checking written entry as know errors do occur in transcription sometimes. Wonder if Joseph Sims wife was one of Thomas Sewells 20 offspring?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 9 Jun 2018 11:04

Emily in 1891 is a housemaid. Everlyn in 1901 is a parlourmaid.
Moving up the employment ladder?

Could be her? If we could check the written entry rather than the typed may be written as Everlyn not Emily? Will try checking for an Emily in the other Censuses

A very long shot - just because she was a servant in Kensington in 1901 .

I don't see the birth of an Emily Sewell 1867-70 in Sheffield.

I know, so frustrating - the answer must be there somewhere. Feel sure if we could find Emma/Evelyn 1891 Census May hold clue? Ivy Dorothy born 189:/4 DLston Midx, Emily Sewell (mother of Emma)born there. Evelyn being mother of Ivy, grandmother of Kathleen House would explain the close relationship - why Ivy and Harry were living with Evelyn and Josep Gower at time of their marriage and why Kathleen buried with her grandmother. Who was William Hood Carpenter - must have existed but they weren’t married - also need Reubens father. Where does the widowed Edward James Smith fit in?

I wish we could find Reuben's birth.

There are no Hood / Sewell births 1901-5.
Several Sewell (unmarried) births, but no Reuben or anything similar.
None of the Reubens born in Berkshire 1901-5 have mms Sewell

Hi, thank you everyone for your input, especially Argyllgran. Well, with a bit of help from Rootschat, we now have some more info:-
We were so near, with 1871 Census, Emma Jane Sewell, aged 2, b Sheffield, daughter of the notorious Thomas Sewell, horse collar maker and Emily nee Bristow, and again in 1881, aged 12. Still can't find her in 1891, but in 1901 she was working as a servant in Kensington, shown as Everlyn Sewell, and as in 1911, she is stating b. Sheffield. So we were right until we found the other Emma Sewell who lived in Sheffield and married Kidd.
The consensus of opinion seems to be that Emma Jane Sewell was indeed Evelyn Hood, as the birth dates shown for Emma Jane Sewell J/A/S 1868 Sheffield Vol 9c page 436, and birth shown for Evelyn Hood on 1939 Register, 21st July 1868 tie up.
Also thought that Evelyn was mother of Ivy Dorothy Hood - baptised as parents William Hood and Emma (that part was right?) living at 80 Templeton Edmonton Tottenham Middx. On checking 1891 census for that property, appears that a William C Amos and his wife Eugenie M Amos lived there with their son Charles then. Would be good to find Emma/Everlyn on 1891 census!!! Therefore, Evelyn Hood would have been the grandmother of Kathleen Matilda Joan House (mothers maiden name Hood) It seems that Evelyn never married, prior to marrying Joseph Gower in 1915, but Ivy's father may well have been a William Hood Carpenter. Equally we don't know the father of Reuben Hood, Evelyn's son born 1903 (down as Reuben Hood on his marriage in 1922) Any more thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

If Kathleen died in 1965, you would expect her record in 1939 to be open.

These are the only deaths I see for a Kathleen M J registered in 1965 and none of them appear to have been born in 1919.

There are two closed records along with Ivy D etc in 1939. One of those will be Kathleen, probably.

Hi, Have Marriage Certificate for marriage 15/8/1916 Harry James House (father Harry House dec) and Ivy Dorothy Hood (father William Hood dec) At the time of the Marriage they were both living at 3 Warwick Road, Redhill, with Evelyn (Hood) and her husband Joseph Gower! The witnesses were George Broughton and Joseph F Dight.
Their first child was Kathleen Matilda Joan House, b 1919 - have found her on Electoral Registers but can't find her anywhere on 1939 Register - although would think she was in Surrey? Know she died in 1965 and was buried with Evelyn and Joseph Gower in Redstone Cemetery, Surrey.
Still can't find the actual birth of Reuben Hood (1903 - Reading) nor anything prior to 1911 census for Evelyn Hood. Reuben says his father was Reuben Hood on his Marriage Cert in 1922 - but was it Edward James Smith as suggested on 1911 Census? Evelyn says her father Thomas Hood (saddler)on her Marriage Cert to Joseph Gower in 1915. She was living at time of marriage at Briars Cross, Limpsfield, and the witnesses were L.R. Smith and Irene Martin. Desperately trying to find the connection between Evelyn Hood, Ivy Dorothy Hood (House) and Kathleen Matilda Joan House.

Thank you Elizabeth - that is helpful. We found Ivy D House, Harry J House, Kenneth C, and Maureen R, all living at same address Colesmead Rd., Reigate on 1939 Register. Kathleen and Sheila's mother was indeed Ivy D House (nee Hood). Any additional information would be much appreciated, also any information about Evelyn Hood prior to the 1911 census (with Reuben Hood, son, born 1903). We know she married Joseph Gower in 1915 and later lived at Warwick Rd., Redhill.
Desperately looking for birth details for Ivy Dorothy Hood (we have her Baptism) and anything regarding Evelyn Hood - her Father is listed on her marriage to Joseph Gower as Thomas Hood, Saddler.

found Ivy D, Harry J Eileen N, John H, and Kathleen J M House all living Colesmead Rd, Riegate in 1946 . Don't know if that helps any. There is also a Sheila House there in 1960 , who was born in 1938. birth index seems to suggest Sheila and Kathleen mother was a Hood
