Thanks Safc, I can find Kezia in the 1901 census at 24 Alfred st bermondsey as widowed ,but a charles chambers and son living in camberwell with a widow Julia Morris and dying at 23 Alfred st regards graham

marriages did break up in those days, and common-law relationships were at least as common as today.
People also married bigamously after a marriage break-up ...........
.......... both bigamy and common-law happened because divorces were extremely expensive and difficult to obtain, and only the very wealthy could afford it ............ or the stigma.
When marriages did break up, the wife often described herself as widowed (or even single) on later censuses, as she wouldn't want the neighbours to know that her husband had left her (or vice versa).
