NOTE:- Ages on the 1841 Census may be as much as 4 years out ...................

the enumerators were instructed to round the ages of all persons over the age of 15 DOWN to the nearest 5

Thus someone who was shown as age 50 on this census could actually be between the age of 50 and 54

This also means that William and Henry are probably NOT twins, but are somewhere between the ages of 20 and 24.

Jennifer ..........

what all this seems to show is that there is apparently no obvious connection with your grandfather or great grandfather owning a Hackney Carriage business in London

He, or they, could of course have WORKED for a Hackney Carriage business.

EDIT, ca 8:30 am, May 17, to clarify meaning.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 17 May 2013 08:33

Sylvia, would a horsekeeper or groom not have worked for a hackney carriage business?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 17 May 2013 08:37

MC

yes, he could ................ but Jennifer seemed to think the family "ran" the business, and I've found no evidence of that.

I'll edit that posting to reflect that

CupCakes Report 17 May 2013 08:53

Referring back to the 1891 census
address is 87 Chalk Farm Road
Frederick J Hughes is a horse keeper
his brother John Hughes 24 is cab driver
his brother Jesse Charles Hughes 22 is a horse keeper

The area they all lived almost near my house is by Regents Park London
Seems like they had a horse and coach business.

John and Jessie located nearer Kentish town area in later censuses.

Also the actual street I live was the largest distibutor of milk in London
Which used horses
There are still many cobbled streets and houses with arches where the stables were at the back.
Some of the businesses gradually changed to motor carriages

Edit: that address is almost by Chalk Farm tube station.
Having been looking for info about the old coach houses in the area. There were special coach stations where they were parked similar to the bus depot of today.
London Hackney Carriage Act 1831 - they were horse drawn before the motor taxi cabs

Absolutely FANTASTIC. I am bowled over by the amount of info. Thank you all so much for your help. To think I have been stuck on this, lol. Been on GR for years and never thought to use it before.
I will have to ask for help for my mum's dad side if you are up for the challenge? :-D

CupCakes Report 17 May 2013 11:41

Glad you are pleased. As I live in the same London area I'm following the addresses. If I find one not to far I'll go and take a photo for you. There are still the London Polls to go through which have addresses - not quite as good as the census but useful...

Edit : London Polls - forgot to mention womens names were generally added after 1921

If you want us to try for info about your mum please start new thread so there is no mix up with the family lines

:-D :-D :-D

Jennifer ..............

So glad that we could help you.

NanaSue has the local knowledge, which is fantastic for you, especially if she can take some photos. One of the advantages of living in the UK.

We, and all the helpers, are always ready to help .............

............. but, please, if you do start another thread to search for your Mum's side, be sure to mention in the Opening Post that you have everything (or almost everything!!) after she married your Dad, referring back to this thread.

The best way to do is the copy and paste the url (ie, the web address that should show somewhere on your screen) ........ this gives the thread number, and people can take a quick look on this to see what has been found.

This is so that people will not waste time looking for your Mum's marriage to your Dad, and then following his side back .................... thus re-dong all the work done on this thread.

Good luck
