I have been absolutely spoiled by the amount of info on Lancs OPC,and just how simple it is to find it,even for me!
Till I get word back re another relative,I am taking a look at my grandmas line,which comes from Cheshire and Staffordshire.
I googled OPC for both of them,but couldn't find anything that remotely resembled the Lancs one.
Does anyone know if something similar IS available for Cheshire and Staffs...and if not,can you make any suggestions where to look?

Just a suggestion...I would also google local libraries..some have an archives section ie parish records etc. Libraries usually give a contact email address...always worth checking.

For some subdistricts, they also give the mum's maiden surname on births pree-1911, and age at death pre-1866, so they're a useful supplement to the GRO index on, say, FreeBMD.
(They also say who wed whom pre-1912, and name the church if it were a C of E marr.)

They have some special collections of Cheshire parish transcriptions (but no images).
Incidentally, there are some Greater Manchester transcriptions and images under:
England, Lancashire, Cheshire, Yorkshire, Parish Registers, 1603-1910
This collection is only partly indexed, but if you've got the church and the entry # (as the last bit of the ref from LancsBMD), then it's easy to browse for marr images if they're there, even if they've not been indexed.

Lancashire OPC is unique pre 1837 records and as it is free it is a wonderful site.

There is no equivalent one for Cheshire how I wish - the one started has never really got off the ground

I subscribe to the mailing list because gradually they are adding all the mothers names against the birth records and I take note of which places have been updated.

Have over the years managed to solve some real mysteries.

I agree,Lancs OPC is brilliant.....I have much admiration for those people who painstakingly went thro records to make such a comprehensive list......thankyou all,wherever you are.
I only tried to copy details from a film once,a couple of months ago,in Dublin....what a fiasco!!
Some of the pages were so faded,the writing was near the colour of the paper,and the ones that were clearer,were very difficult to decipher.
Plus,as they were RC records,majority were in Latin!
So I appreciate transcribers even more now!

Joy..just noticed you are researching McCuskers.,Fermanagh and Galway.
There wouldn't be any in Armagh would there?
Reason I ask,a friends mummy was a McCusker before marriage.
They are a very musical family..some of her brothers formed a Band,which used to play on Radio Eirrean.
My daughter works with one of their nephews,who also teaches Irish Traditional music to youngsters.

You could try freereg for Staffs (http://www.freereg.org.uk/index.shtml); it seems to have a fair amount of transcriptions. Not very many for Cheshire though.

I have to say, I love Lancs OPC ............ I get lots of information from it.

and Lancs bmd is also helpful, often providing the mother's maiden name well before any other site, thus helping to confirm that I am dealing with the correct family.

One very silly sounding thing that you can do Elaine, is to Google the name you are looking for.


It is amazing what you can find that way.

I found the marriage of one of OH's ancestor's back in the early 1700s in an obscure parish register, copied way back when and put on the web about 10 years ago!


I had to search through hundreds of pages to find out why the name had been picked up by Google ................... passing hundreds of references to the same surname.

I must get back some time to check those other names .............. they are probably related!
