I often think the links are very long!

Elaine if I may offer a tip - try http://goo.gl/ when you have a very long URL to copy and paste. That site shortens the URL so it doesn't s-t-r-e-t-c-h the page!

This is how your link above comes out after being shortened - http://goo.gl/wB4ZxM

It's part of Kent Elaine. Kent is divided into different areas. Medway encompasses the towns which lie around the Medway River........Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham etc.

Where is Medway,Cynthia? My geography is atrocious!

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 15 May 2013 10:40

If ever you find yourself with relatives from the Medway area, the Medway City Ark archives are superb and free!

Maybe they are not as easy to navigate as Lancs opc, but the actual record is online and it's very moving to see your ancestor's signature or mark and any odd quirky comments the clergy may have added. Brilliant site. Cx :-)

Thnx Potty and mgnv....I might be a bit biased, being a Lancashire woman, but I do find the Lancs OPC the best! Lol ;-)

Have just noticed that FMP has some Cheshire parish registers online - not all of them yet. I presume GR will follow up on this and add them sometime too.

Elaine, try this:

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl
or just google freereg

Or go to the links page on lancs-opc which also gives links to other opc sites,

I have to say, I love Lancs OPC ............ I get lots of information from it.

and Lancs bmd is also helpful, often providing the mother's maiden name well before any other site, thus helping to confirm that I am dealing with the correct family.

free reg ................. I have problems with!

I think I have found something on there just once out of hundreds of searches :-(

They just haven't got to any of my areas or names yet.

One very silly sounding thing that you can do Elaine, is to Google the name you are looking for.

It is amazing what you can find that way.

I found the marriage of one of OH's ancestor's back in the early 1700s in an obscure parish register, copied way back when and put on the web about 10 years ago!

I had to search through hundreds of pages to find out why the name had been picked up by Google ................... passing hundreds of references to the same surname.

I must get back some time to check those other names .............. they are probably related!

You could try freereg for Staffs (http://www.freereg.org.uk/index.shtml); it seems to have a fair amount of transcriptions. Not very many for Cheshire though.

Joy..just noticed you are researching McCuskers.,Fermanagh and Galway.
There wouldn't be any in Armagh would there?
Reason I ask,a friends mummy was a McCusker before marriage.
They are a very musical family..some of her brothers formed a Band, which used to play on Radio Eirrean.
My daughter works with one of their nephews, who also teaches Irish Traditional music to youngsters.

Thankyou all for the info.
You are welcome Alan....people shouldn't knock transcribers till they've tried to do it themselves!
