Elaine

Elaine Report 21 Apr 2013 19:40

L.A....have sent an email to the link you gave me for Lancashire records. I asked would it be possible for them to do a lookup for me for a Peter Whitfield to an Ellen in c1809.
Got an automated reply saying my query would be answered within 2 working days.
If they say there is a charge,I will certainly make use of your offer to look for me.
Thnx again.

did you specify the church as well?

Elaine

Elaine Report 21 Apr 2013 22:57

Sorry,I didn't think to....the marriage in St Elphin.,Warrington, was the only one for a Peter Whitfield to an Ellen(or Helen) in 1809.

Should I send another email,or wait till I get their reply? Will find out if they will do the lookup then too.

lancashireAnn Report 22 Apr 2013 12:11

they will need the church - St Michaels Burtonwood is the only one you need, Warrington are all online

They have literally records for hundreds of churches in their archives and could not possible check anything without the church info.

St Michaels Burtonwood sould be easy to check as they have printed marriage records for the years you need, most others are on microfilm or fiche.

You could also send an enquiry to Cheshire records office specifying the church as St Mary's Great Sankey which is where Ellen was born according to census records

L.A....got this reply this morning...

*Lancashire Online Parish Clerk is a fantastic resource, but actually transcribing registers is a long process so it will be a long time before it is comprehensive.

We hold records for hundreds of churches throughout Lancashire, the vast majority of which are not name indexed, so a search of this kind would literally mean checking through the registers of every possible church. We do not have the staff resources to conduct such research on your behalf. Information for planning a visit, as well as a list of record agents able to undertake research, can be found via our website at www.archives.lancashire.gov.uk, where you can also find a list of the church registers that we hold.*

so I would like to take up your very kind offer, whenever you go to the office, but if you have too much of your own to do,I will understand.

Great Sankey is on the Lancs OPC site,.. the marriages go from 1730--1938, APART from the bit I need..there none with surname index for 1752--1842 !

If its not on the surname index, does that mean they don't have the records for that period,or just that they haven't sorted them into Surnames yet?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 22 Apr 2013 15:56

try emailing Lancs again this time specifying the look up you want is for St Michaels Burtonwood Peter Whitfield to Ellen c 1810

Lancs do not have the records for Great Sankey that you need. Where a place was once Lancs but is now Cheshire, the main records are held at Cheshire. What is on lan-opc is all that is held at Lancs. According to the Cheshire Archives site they have the records for those missing years. Again you must specify the church

thankyou..will do. Will look for email address for Cheshire records office. :-)

Elaine

Elaine Report 24 Apr 2013 03:12

Lancs don't have Burtonwood eitherL.A.....had sent another email with name of Church. Sent email to Cheshire, and got reply back saying I could get searches done, but would have to pay someone to search,or else I think I can call in myself and do it free.
But as I am in N.Ireland, this isn't possible.
Wonder if there is anyone on here who lives near, and uses Cheshire records, and who may look for a marriage in gt Sankey or Burtonwood?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 24 Apr 2013 16:59

I checked with Lancs archives and even though their catalogue says they have those years in fact the middle ones of the years shown are missing.

I have put a request for you on Find Ancestors to see if anyone is available to do a look up at Cheshire for you.

Elaine

Elaine Report 24 Apr 2013 17:31

thankyou so much.I appreciate that.

Do hope there's only 1 marriage for a Peter Whitfield and Ellen(and that its the one i found..lol!)

can anyone go on Find Ancestors or is it a pay site?

Elaine :-)

Thanks for your comments Renes - it was one that grabbed me though it is not an area of Lancs I know well but I do know the lancs research areas, as do a few other people from Lancs on this site.

Don't know how,but I seem to have gone from looking for John Parr marriage(and hopefully, birth) to the Whitfield side of the family!
Have found JohnParr and Elizabeth(Betty?) in 1841 uk census, but then I can't find them in any later ones,as requested by MarieCeleste.
Also can't find a birth in 1796..
Children all bapt at St. Mary, now St. Helen.,St. Helen's,lancs
Marriage of John Parr to Betty Twiss, was at St. Mary the Virgin.,Prescot.,Lancs
Can't find a birth for him(so I will see who his father was.
I like to see can I find info myself, before asking for help, but think I have been chasing my tail long enough now!

lancashireAnn Report 27 Apr 2013 16:13

none of the baptisms between 1700 & 1813 are on line for any of the St Helen's (St Helen's, Eccleston, Sutton & Parr) hurches, nor marriages before 1813
