The mystery R&R'er has been at work, reporting all posts on Genealogy Chat that mention other sites :-S :-S

I have just noticed that too

Posting links to other sites is in contravention of GR's terms and conditions, so is a valid reason for reporting.

i.e.

.....In particular, you agree not to use the Genes Reunited Service to provide links to third party websites.

Was this one of those?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Jan 2012 07:01

IGP

Most were not links, so far as I saw.

Most were valid discussions, such as are often held on all boards on GR, without any problem.

So if someone says ''try freebmd'' that thread will be Zapped?

or is it that posting'' http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/'' will get it zapped?

Hope this doesn't get zapped!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Jan 2012 07:28

Penny

posts and threads like that usually do not get zapped .... regardless of what the T&C's say, GR seems to ignore them.

But then we get the mystery R&R'er at work, every now and again :-D

NOTICED THEY WERE R&R LAST NIGHT

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 3 Jan 2012 10:41

If they are employed by GR, they ought to indicate they have RR'd and why.

If not, they are NOT employed and should have no right to act as Board Police anonymously. They should stand by their convictions and actually post that they have RR'd and the reason why.

Even the Civil police force have to tell someone why they've been arrested, at least in most English speaking countries and in Europe. It's exactly the same thing.

Perhaps the Message Genes uses in these circumstances could be modified to include the board name of the person who has made the request for removal and also perhaps the reason?

At least we would know then and maybe that person would be more likely to explain on the thread concerned..

I think we all have a right to know why at the very least..

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 3 Jan 2012 11:13

Agreed Jeremy - there ought to be an automatic substitute post explaining why it has been RR'd, even if the name remains hidden.

At least one was RR'd after I'd logged off after 00:30 last night. The person responsible for that one is either an insomniac/shift worker, or in a different time zone.

Penny Report 3 Jan 2012 11:35

I guiess then , the resultant deletings will illustrate what is going on.
if someone is just policing the boards and beings super picky about rules and guidelines, the GR will not hesitate to reinstate the threads.
If however it is GR themselves then I guess they will go and stop gone.

Time will tell

So much angst has been caused ( wars nearly) by people saying ''I reported it because....'' That I am not suprised people dont say. I would if I did, but if i did it would be for a reason that I really thought justified, probably human being based ( ie personal info)

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 3 Jan 2012 11:40

That's reasonable Penny, but in addition it would probably be best to PM the poster and give them a chance to edit the information.

Probably the majority who fall into the 'too much info' category are fairly new at posting.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 3 Jan 2012 12:25

Its about time these people who belive they have a high status on GR as unoffical guardians of the boards, took in more fresh air,or had the courage to add thier name to threads they report because a post isnt to their liking and resort to telling members what to post!

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 3 Jan 2012 12:34

Surely it wouldn't be GR requesting a review? They wouldn't need to request, they would simply review and either delete or leave it?

Flick

Flick Report 3 Jan 2012 13:35

I'll happily admit that I have reported a couple of threads in the last year, BUT that was only after sending a PM to the poster requesting that the inappropriate info be deleted, and finding that it hadn't.

I don't think I saw what the original posts were about, but I presume they referred to sites such as Rootschat etc.

That site is often suggested by helpers on here in an endeavour to help others who are looking for someone to search a local graveyard etc. As GR does not work in the same way and each site has its own merits, I would have thought that quite acceptable.

Maybe the annoyingly repetitious RR'r needs to get untangled from their red tape a little.

I will now stand with my head bowed and my hands tied behind my back as I await the fall of the axe for mentioning the word....Rootschat.

You do have to wonder what is going on in peoples minds.

As least I now know what the 'problem' was.

But that does not make it any better. We always mention other sites on here for research purposes. We all know that you need as much help as possible and in some cases there are people on other sites such as Rootschat who specialise in certain subjects and are not necessarily interested in Genealogy/Family History but their assistance can be invaluable in our own research.

YAH BOO SUCKS to the phanton RR'r. :-P

So have the reported posts been reinstated now? Mine in http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1289001?d=desc mentions two other sites.
