Information please. Could anyone tell me the names of the Church/Churches in the Aglish RC Parish? My great grandfather was christened in this Parish in 1841 and I would like to identify the Church.

There is info available.

Thank you George, will do. Why didn't I think of that simple solution? Doh

Well, I tried that, George. Plenty of hits with genealogical info - but nowhere could I find the name of the church, just references to the Catholic Parish of Aglish!

Hi Potty and George,

Thanks to both of you for responding. Am back from my attempts on google and like you, Potty, had no luck. Have just tried your suggested link George but there appear to be two Aglish Parishes. The one I'm researching is in County Mayo which is north of the Aglish on the wikipedia map. Am still searching.

Lynn

I jus googled "catholic parish of Aglish" in quotation marks and the one Joy mentioned re Angelfire came up straight away.

When you google , if at first you don't succeed try wrapping what you want in quotation marks... try various words from what you want not the exact phrase as well. Have to think laterally, and upside down and as the saying goes "every which way but lose" - 9 times out of 10 you will get somewhere or on the track to somewhere.

Aglish Civil Parish Characteristics, County Mayo, Ireland

still no names of churches.

Aglish Civil Parish falls within Carra Barony and is part of Castlebar Roman Catholic Parish. The Civil Parishes of Aglish, Breaffy (Breaghwy) and Ballyheane make up the modern parish of Castlebar. When the Griffith's Valuation was conducted for Aglish Civil Parish in 1857, there were essentially four churches: a Roman Catholic Chapel in the Town of Castlebar that lies within the Townland of Garryduff, a Convent and Convent Chapel in the Town of Castlebar within the Townland of Gorteendrunagh, a church of unknown affiliation in the Town of Castlebar within the Townland of Knockaphunta and a Wesleyan Meeting House on the Green (Mall) in the Town of Castlebar that resides in the Townland of Knockaphunta. There were two Graveyards, one in the Townland of Ballynew and one in the Town of Castlebar within Knockphunta. There was also a burial ground in the Town of Castlebar within the Townland of Knockacroghery. (Griffiths, 1847-1864; 2003, Aglish).

Strange that Vera,

Heaps of Parishes, and lots of Baptisms with the street names of the parents etc.

Did find this on Wikipedia

There are three Catholic churches within the parish

the Church of the Assumption, Aglish
the Church of St. James, Ballinameela (1833)
Mount Stuart Church.

There is a great long list of names in Aglish including Knockphunta (I love that name) and Knockacroghery.

There is a lot of data on the net about the parish but whether it yields what Lynn wants? is another thing.

Lynn ...How do you know he was Baptised there..? If you have his Baptismal Cert.then surely that gives the name of the Church.....

Lyho47 Report 31 Jul 2011 20:31

Hi Eringobragh,

Haven't got the birth certificate. Paid my 5 euros and got the information from rootsireland, so all it gave me was date of baptism, parents names, sponsors names and simply recorded Aglish RC Parish. I discovered this afternoon that there was an old RC Church in Castlebar that was demolished when the Holy Rosary Church was consecrated in 1901. I suspect that may have been the one-yes? Am now attempting to track down where they lived but don't know where to begin. I have the date of the marriage of my great grandfathers parents now but have come to a full stop in making progress with my search.
Best wishes from Lynn
p.s. could have been the Church of the Assumption that Vera mentioned as that doesn't appear to exist now.

:-) to Vera.

Good Luck Lynn it's a real beggar when you pay for something and not all the info you want is there. Especially when you pay for a look at what might or might not be what you want.

Edit: Just thought I would add re George who posted earlier on thread.... well that is his photo in the avatar.. I think it is great.

Lynn.....Assuming it is the elusive Wm.son of Lewis Farrell and Esther/Ellen Bellew you are after....

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/ancestors/thread/1271401?page=1

I have had no luck finding either there are a couple of Bellew listed but none matching...No Lewis Farrell/Farrill tried various Permutations....

Have you looked at Lewis Farrell b Ireland and living (1861) Elham (Folkstone) he died 1869 aged 34 Death Reg Headington.....there are also other Farrells in Elham a W.Farrell b 1841 Ireland.

I do not have access to the Census to check out this for you...I also see a James Bellew on the index.....

Have you considered Lewis may have been based in Castlebar...it was a Military Town.....

There is a Death Reg June quarter Wigan 1863 for an Esther Farrell....Have you looked at that one...?

Lyho47 Report 1 Aug 2011 21:36

Hello again Eringobragh,

Have found a couple using a very creative permutation. Tried LUIS FERRAL and ESTER BELLEW. This couple were married on 11 December 1835 in the Aglish Parish. Do you think the spelling is too different for it to be the same couple?? Interestingly, Luis is recorded as being employed in the Revenue Police (if this is my relative, am thoroughly ashamed and embarrassed!)
Am interested in pursuing the Elham links. Did you find these on Genes? I've had no luck searching for Lewis in the English census and only found William in 1881 and 1891 living in Wigan. Will also check out the death of Esther.
Thank you so much for pointers.
p.s. have now tried to check census records for Elham on both Genes site and Ancestry, but drew blanks on both. Where did you find them? Would like to check out the William born in 1841 but that Lewis couldn't be the father because if he died in 1869 aged 34, then he was born in 1835 (brother?) A challenge this Irish family research isn't it??

Lynn....Look on it as an adventurous journey... You never know what you will find along the way.....!!!

The Eltham farrell's I found are listed in the GR index (above ) "Search Records"
Yes I think your Luis is the correct one...Well done !!
I didnt find him....spelling of both Christian and Surnames have changed considerably over the years hence its necessary to use every permutation even withing the same families....

This exciting journey feels like a trip around a maze! I manage the difficulty of Finding Luis and Ester through creative spelling but still can't find the Elham/ Eltham Farrells on GR. What am I doing wrong? I keep getting the response - no record.
