On the marriage cert to Roseanna, who is shown as John's father and what occupation. |

I don't think that IS him Nicky as the children don't 'fit'. But I hadn't seen that one. There do seem to be a lot of John Roaths in the records considering how unusual the name is. |

His marriage cert. will give his fathers name....Have you located him in 1841 and 1851 with his parents? Maybe the age given will help you narrow down the search if it is consistent with 1837 like the others... |

Sorry Gwyn, I forgot to say his father was James - hence I was alerted by the IGI of John son of James and Jane but the birth date was earlier. |

So this is him in 1881 then? |

Yes - John married Harriet in 1877 |

I don't think so Nicky. That family are on the 1891 census with a wife called Ellen who hasn't shown on my radar yet. |

Nickydownsouth | Report | 19 Jun 2010 23:25 |
Ellen couldn`t have been a 4th wife could she?? |

Hi is this the 1891 census you have |

Jilliflower | Report | 19 Jun 2010 23:31 |
Well, that's a thought! I hadn't followed the Harriet marriage at all as my line came through his first wife, Rosanna via George Roath. But I bet youre right about ANOTHER marriage. I must get round to counting all his children by four wives. |

So whos child is this then? She has the names of his 1st 2 wives....!!! How weird is that?? |

I think I am going to have to resort to Parish records to find John, but I did want to try and pin him down a bit more. I did wonder if he had knocked a few years off his age and was actually born in 1833. Although the ages are consistent in all the records. |
