HI steven,

Well Cicely is my Grandmother, and I got her name and address from my Mums birth cerificate which I sent away for after she died last year. It was only after she died that I discovered that my Mum had been informally adopted in 1926. Cicely Hall was the name on the birth cert and the address given was Reed Pond Walk Romford, occupation Millinery Designer. I am just trying to fill in the gaps and discover where she came from.

Regards Barbara

Hi Steven,

Its ok about all the questions. I will answer what I can, dont arrest me!

My Mothers name was Betty Dorothy Hall (adopted name Nurse) she was born 19th July 1926 at 14 Alexandra Road Portsmouth the person who registered the birth was E. Mills who I think was Elizabeth Mills a midwife and also, as far as I can gather, also a resident of that address. I think my Mum was adopted soon after birth, her birth mother worked as a midwives assistant I think. No fathers name on birth cert. Baptisim took place in August along with several other family members also being baptised at the same time strangely enough. Also there was a couple resident at 14 Alexandra Road called Crafts or maybe more likely Crofts.

That seems like alot of information but it gets me nowhere!

Regards, Barbara

Barbara, re. the baptism - when you say "several other family members" who are they? And have you checked the electoral register for reed pond walk?
I also wonder who the Crofts/Crafts were. What were their names?

I wonder if your mothers name Betty Dorothy might be a clue in finding Cicely.

Perhaps Cicelys mother was Betty or Dorothy

This Cicely might be the one above - born Portsmouth - but too young maybe?

the other family members baptised were siblings, 4 of them, oldest about 13, Mums mothers name was down as Louisa Hall, all very confusing. The Crofts or Crafts names were Edith and I think Theakston. Havent been able to check electrol register for Reed pond Walk as I live in Dublin. good idea about checking for a Betty Dorothy Hall. Such a mystery.

Barbara,

Can you list the siblings' names and birthdates? If we can discover where they were born that might help.

Barbara,

Please can you list their names and dates of birth? Every little detail is a clue.

If the oldest was born c1913 that might be close enough to the 1911 census to find the mother.

Steven,
That all sounds very possible. My laptop is again out of action and that is where i have all my information but from memory Ruskin Road is very near Pretoria \\road where my Mum's adoptive family lived and was the address she was brought home to. Feel this is the right track. what do you make of the reed pond walk address?

meant to add that that Cicely as i have mentioned is on the tree of a genesreunited member to whom i have sent several messages but they have never been opened. frustrating!

Barbara

the Reed Pond Walk address could have been a small nursing home ........ I remember reading in one of the books by that Yorkshire vet, that his son was born in the upstairs bedroom of the local nurse's house ............. that was de facto the "nursing home".

It might have been the house of a family that she moved into while pregnant, to try to keep the pregnancy secret from family and friends.

You could ask for an electoral roll look up to see who is registered there ... it might just the names of adult males (ie, of an age to vote), or adult women may also be included ................. I'm not sure when women's names were added.

The local library should have the electoral roll, and many will look up addresses for you, some may charge a small fee. It would probably help if you have a number for the address.

There are a couple of people on these boards who offer electoral roll look-ups ........ you could either start a new thread JUST asking for the look-up (and saying that you don't want any other information), add the fact to the title of this thread .... or put electoral roll in the search facility.

I forget which board the main look up thread is on, but the thread owner's name is Joan, and the thread is usually on the first couple of pages.

Sylvia ( in Canada)

Women were given the right to vote January 1917 . They had to be over 30,householders,the wives of householders, occupiers of property with an annual rent of £5 or graduates of British universities.

MP's rejected the idea of granting the vote to women on the same terms as men.
Wouldn't they be shocked to see so many women holding office in governments around the world?

Women had their first opportunity to vote in Dec 1918

Barbara, so your mum's birth cert gives the address of Cicely as being Romford, but your mum was born in Portsmouth? Birth certs don't usually give the address of the mother, only of the child and the informant.

Barbara

Barbara Report 26 Oct 2009 20:09

yes that was the address under the mothers name. the person who registered the birth was E. Mills of 14 Alexandra Road Portsmouth who was a midwife. very confusing i know!

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 26 Oct 2009 20:09

Im a bit puzzled too Madmeg.

Barbara said her mum was born 1926 Portsmouth and the midwife? registered the birth.
Also her mums mum was working as a midwifes assistant at Reeds Pond Walk Essex which is in Gidea Park Havering from what I could find

I guess she could have done that if she stayed at Reeds Pond Walk instead of getting wages bur her real occupation was millinery designer.

Has there been a search done for a marriage for Cicely?

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 26 Oct 2009 20:15

Barbara.

That is very strange. As mentioned you only usually get the address of where the birth took place.

Is it possible Cicely died when Betty was born and that is why the midwife gave the extra details?
