David

David Report 25 May 2009 21:28

From my great great grand parents, whose birth dates I know and have found on census I want to find the marriage record so that I can find their parents.

I have beem using the GR Search Records

David Report 25 May 2009 21:31

If you give the names, years of birth and area of birth or where they were living someone will try to help.

David - re: "I cannot order a marriage certificate until I first find the marriage recorded in the records (?)"
Well, technically you can, but it costs extra for the search, and who knows what, if anything, you're going to get.

If you're just wanting the names of your ggg grandparents, isn't a better way to just buy your gg grandparents b.certs? (I'm assuming we're talking about events in England-Wales here.)

David

David Report 26 May 2009 18:39

When I succeed in finding the marriage do I buy the certificate from GR ?

David

David Report 26 May 2009 20:45

Thank you YummyMummy.

Despite being a full GR member and having the facility for unlimited access I havent had much luck finding ancestors. There are dozens, hundreds with the same names about the same time. That's what puzzles me hence my initial question which one/ Must require immense concentration and patience.
.
If I give gro.gov.uk the bits of info I have will they search for me ?

Much of the info I have I was given or pointed at so I must say thank you once again that I've got this far

Look on FreeBMD to find the gro reference then they won't have to search for you.

David

Put the following into your address bar>>>>

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Then hit 'search'

Then put in the names you have (even just christian name of the female)
Also highlight that your looking for a marriage.

When you find the correct Marriage, save the page and volume number also the district name.
Send this info to >>> http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ and the cert will only cost you £7. This is much cheaper than getting them to search for you!

Certs can be ordered on line and only take a few days to arrive (this is when you hug Mr. Postie lol)

Also...

If your unsure of the females christian name but think you have found the correct district and time frame....you can order the cert with just putting the mans name.

GRO will send the correct marriage for that man.

David,

I would say again that if you want to give the names of the couple and any information you know about them to help find the marriage, someone will try to look for you.

Most people on here use FreeBMD or Ancestry to search for births, marriages and deaths. Searching using GR is not the most economical way to search records.

DAvid

Give us the names you are looking for. Everyone on here has ways and means of finding info, depending on what subscriptions they have and to what sites. We might save you spending anything at all, all alternatively might know of ways to get certificates checked before you pay for them. There are all sorts of sites than can help and someone on here will know about them. Names and dates please are needed.

My mothers father, my grand father was Thomas Atkinsinson 1880-1958 son of John, son of Joseph.

Janet Alice Dodds nee Stewart (widow) was his second wife, his first being Margaret Cunningham

Definitely looks like the September qtr 1838 marriage in Castle Ward is the right one for your great great grandparents.

Told you David that someone would be able to help if you gave the names. It's so much easier with a few pairs of eyes looking for information.
