Evaline Russell Report 2 Sep 2008 11:23

I am trying to find information on my grandmother Hannah Worthington. She used to say she was born in 1870 which is more or less confirmed by her marriage cert, and 1901 census, but the record of her death in 1945 says she was 82, which puts her date of birth as 1864. She was born in Burscough and her father is said to be an agricultural labourer (deceased) on her marriage cert. of May 1896 and her age is given as 26. The GRO, Orkskirk , Preston and Southport registries have no record of her birth in 1870. There is a Hannah Worthington born in Burscough in 1964 but her father was a boatman. As I don`t know her mother`s name I cannot verify either of these Richard Worthingtons as her father nor whether I have the right Hannah in the records. CAN ANYONE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME. Thank you. Evaline Russell

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 2 Sep 2008 11:47

Maybe she adjusted her age on her marriage if there was a big difference with her husbands age.but this was later corrected in her death cert. I cant think someone would be 6 years out with a death age if the informant was a relation.
I cant see the family on later than the 1871 census, but Richard was in his 50,s then so most possibly deceased by the time she married. She may have been mistaken in his occupation or he changed it before he died

sorry i am not convinced with the census

Euxton does exist ,It is in chorley Cheshire

i have looked it up on the Map

On the 1871 census I think it should say Margaret for his wife and not Margarey their is no Marriage for that name

sablon

sablon Report 2 Sep 2008 18:30

so she was born 1864 the same place as her father in Ormskirk her Father Richard born c 1819 was married there also in 1845 aged about 26 years and died 1890 aged 71 making his birth year c 1819

this is what i think and that he married one of the women in the marriage i found , It is possible he married twice as there is a large gap between her birth and his marriage Maybe he married a Margaret the second time

Samuel born 1847 and Margaret born 1849 Ann born 1850 could have been born from his first wife

There are 2 Richards in one of the census, I think it was 1891, one was a farm owner, which I think may have been the grandfather and the son was also an agricultural lavourer, and I think he might have been the father. One was 53 and the other 17 in the census. In the same census the boatman Richard also turns up aged 58. The Ellen Worthington is her daughter and she is on the 1901 census.

Remember that the only thing that is accurate on a death certificate is the date and the cause of death!

Oh, and possibly the name of the informant!

Everything else on there has been provided by the informant, who may or may not be a relation, but in any case who only knows what he/she has been told by the deceased person!

GillianMac Report 3 Sep 2008 13:55

I confess to being totally confused now -I am content to rule out the Hannah in Euxton and apologies for my poor geography but I thought I would set out each census as I found it to have a continuous pattern to consider
1841 Burscough
Richard Worthington 20 Ag Lab
Margaret Worthington 18
(On the same page is a John Worthington 40 Boatman and his wife Jane 35 - possible Richards father from whom he inherited or took over the boat in 1851)
1851Wigan
Richard Worthington 37 Boatman b Burscough
Margaret 30 b Scarisbrick
Richard 9 b Scarisbrick
William 7 b Scarisbrick
Samuel 3 b Scarisbrick
Ann 5 b Wigan
Margaret 1 b Wigan

1861 Vessel "Trio" Leeds /Liverpool Canal
Richard Worthington 50 Captain b Ormskirk
Margery 45 b Scarisbrick
Ann 14 b Wigan
Margret 11 b Burscough
John 6 b Burscough
Jane 4 b Burscough
Richard 2 b Liverpool

1871 Litherland
Richard Worthington 58 Boatman b Burscough
Margery Worthington 53 b Scarisbrick
Samuel 21
Margaret 19
Esther 7
Hannah 7
Ellen 9

Is there not a possibility that Margaret/Margery is just an alternative form of the name and the same person? Same birthplace throughout and tho the ages fluctuate so do Richards and the childrens -which is not uncommon -in an age of illiteracy the forms were often completed by clerks on guesswork

I have also checked the other Richard mentioned (the farmer ) and he was widowed by 1861 and remained so to 1881 so could not be the (legitimate )father of Hannah
