The following sites may be of interest to anyone with Romany folki in their ancestry. If you have Beeney's, Ripley's, or Roberts in your tree I will personally help if I can. I also have Clark's, Elliott's, and Bexell's.

Hi! Doing great thanks. I put a letter in the Newport paper and my great grans brothers granddaughter wrote, with lots of info. From that, Im back to 1791 (have checked it all with baptisms/census etc). Gypsy heritage never stops being interesting :-)

nudge for anyone who needs it. (No apologies from me for nudging!). Romany Road is run by Mary Horner, among others, who is a lovely lady. Email her and she'll do her best to help. The author Robert Dawson will also reply personally, enclose an SAE tho! He is a gorja but very knowledgable about everything Romany. Stow fair is next month.

4 October 1812
STOCKBRIDGE, Elizabeth about 23 years old. 'From her earliest rememberance she has travelled the country with an itinerant family calling themselves and her by the name of LOADER and believed herself their child until she was informed by them that they had stolen her from her parents as an infant. This declaration was preceded and followed by much ill treatment and at length. In Spring 1811 they contrived totally to desert her near Stockbridge in Hants whence she assumed her name. She shortly after wandered into this parish where she has been kindly received and shown herself worthy of it.'

Wonder what happened to her in the end, poor thing.

I to read that, it was sad reading. Wonder if she is on the census at all in that part of the country?
Just had a quick look and couldn't see anything, a bit silly really to look as she would more than likely have got married and changed her name.

Did you use to go on the old site?

RStar

RStar Report 23 Apr 2008 20:32

Hi Tina, I looked on the census too lol! No, I never knew the site existed until you mentioned it on here. Ive just joined RTFHS, their journals are very informative.

TinaElizabeth Report 23 Apr 2008 20:43

Is that the same as Romany Routes, the green journals? I to belong there, have been for about 18 mths. They are a lovely lot very helpful and very knowledgeable.

RStar

RStar Report 23 Apr 2008 20:53

Yes same one. I have Roberts family in one of the back journals, so going to order some back issues. Are you going to Stow fair? I think the RTFHS have a stand there.

I have just come across some possible Romany family in East Hendred, Berkshire.

Their surnames are Roberts, Shadwell and Wiltshire.

Do you have any info on these names in this part of the south?

Regards
Carolyn

RStar Report 24 Apr 2008 14:14

Hi Caroline. I have Roberts family, not actually shown as being in Berkshire but they may be linked, possibly. Its hard to say at the minute. Have you looked at the sites mentioned, Romanygenes etc? If you post on the message boards someone may have a match.
