I found the same Frank Lindsay as Andy in the 1881 census.

I think his occupation is actually Hostler - which is a groo,. In the 1891 census there is groom written in brackets after cab driver so I think it's the right person and there is no sign in 1881 or 1891 of a Frederick W. Lindsay that match the details on the 1901 census.

Perhaps he just fancied a change of name (just to keep you on your toes, lol).

I think that in the 1871 census that Andy found, that the father's name is probably James and not Lames as transcribed - which is why Frank names his first son James.

I've got ancestors who changed from Francis to Frank and back again. I think its the correct family. In 1901 George is a cab driver as well. He is on the same census page as Francis, living a few doors away.

Sorry Trudy - I'm just having a senior moment. I don't know where I got the name Frederick from. Just thought I was looking for a Frederick rather than a Francis.

Frank and Francis were often interchangeable so I think it is the same family because of the children's names, but perhaps Frank/Francis has been married twice - first to Ann and then to Emma.

This is getting more intrigueing. Did they used to change their names legally back then? Is there anyway of checking to see if he was married more than once? Oooh, I wonder if he was a bigamist!
This research is getting more exciting. Thank you both so much for all your imput. I would never have been able to work all this out for myself. I spend hours searching through records so I must confess I am hopeless at it.

I don't think they would have changed a first name from Frank to Francis legally. It's just one of those names that is interchangeable (just like a lot of John's get called Jack).

You also have to realise that there are loads of mistakes on the census returns, so it's possible that the fact that his wife is called Ann on the 1891 census and Emma on the 1901 census could just be a mistake.

Since I have now found his marriage to Emma in 1882, I think the name Ann on the 1891 census is just a mistake by the enumerator.

There is never a foolproof way of being 100% certain, you just have to work out from all the other details that you have found the right family.

Looking at the census, I think Francis only married once in 1882 as Kath has found. Frank/Francis is interchangable. Some of the misspelling of names that you see in the census records are probably due to the enumerator writing what he thought he heard people say. I've got one surname in my tree that has a dozen different spellings.

How do you good people do it? Find these records so quickly. Thank you for the marriage info.

Tonight I will print off all the info you and Andy have managed to dig up for me and put it all into my family tree.

I have a sister and brothers although only in contact with sister and 1 brother but they will be pleased when I update them. So many of my family I can't find,especially my eldest brother and mother but I am certainly doing well finding out about the ancestors.

Thanks for your input. I have a birth certificate of my grandfather on my mothers side that some of the writing is illegible.plus my eyesight is past its best which doesn't help! LOL.
I didn't realize that names were changed so much either purposely or done by error so I have certainly learned something new today.

Sorry I don't think I can give you instructions for emailing a scan.

Our scanner is very old but my son doesn't change it because it is so simple to use that even I can use it (and I haven't a clue about technology). On ours you just put the certificate into the scanner and press a button to email or another to copy. If I press email it just scans the certificate and then a window comes up with an email box with the scan ready to fill in the recipient's name.
