I've been doing a bit more on my Smoothy family and realise that although I know where she lived at the end of her life, I have lost my great-great aunt in 1881 and 1891. |

My missing auntie: SMOOTHY, Emily Esther 1862 Born in Richmond, Surrey 18 March and baptised 27 April. 1871 she is 10, a scholar, with her family at 24 The Green, Richmond. 1881 her mother, father and her younger brother and sister were all living at Vestry Cottage, Richmond. [Her elder sister, Elizabeth Louisa, was an undermaid in a household in Speldhurst - mistranscribed as Smothey.] 1901 she is 39, living unmarried and unoccupied with her sister Elizabeth, who is now a widow, in Wandsworth. Can anyone find her 1881/1891 pleeeeease? nell |

Hi Nell, Have you seen this one? Is she your missing Smoothy or maybe a relative? Mousley could be what we know call Molesley which is fairly near Richmond. Ladies Thank you all so much. Yes, I did find the Emily Smoothy b. East Molesey, father Arthur. As far as I know they are not related to my Smoothys :-( My Smoothy family started with John Smoothy who was born in Chelmsford and moved to Richmond with his wife shortly after they married in Kennington. Their 4 children were all born at 24, The Green, Richmond which he kept as a lodging house. Around 1875 [that year's street directory is missing from Richmond Local Studies Centre!] he moved to Vestry Cottage and remained there as parish beadle/vestry messenger/coroner's officer/assistant overseer of the poor until he died in 1894. I am sure Emily Esther was working in 1881 and 1891 but I just don't know where - I've found her parents and siblings, but she must be very badly mistranscribed SOMEWHERE!!! Thanks again, everyone, for looking. nell |

Nell Just so you don't think you're talking to yourself, I spent about an hour earlier having a look after seeing your thread last night. I see what you mean about the lady being well hidden or hideously mistranscribed cos I couldn't see anything on either census that you can even have said 'Well she's a possible'! Will have another mooch when I've made a cuppa! Lou |

Lou Thank you for looking - you've earned your cuppa! I did a search on 1881 with just Emily and her birth year and place and trawled through tons of Emilys but none looked remotely likely. So frustrating, but at least I know when/where she got married and died. I got all excited when I went to Richmond Local History Centre and found that living next door to her brother on the electoral roll was her future husband, so I guess she met him over the garden fence! nell |

Esta Wow! I am impressed! Mind you, as I found her brother on the 1901 census as 'Lenorthey' I can't say 'Timothy' was that much of a surprise! What a shame that the census filler-inners didn't do plain capitals when writing. It makes it soooo hard when the first initial is wrong. More grateful than I can say - any chance you could e-mail me the image? nell |

Nell......I'm really sorry I can't email the image to you ( That's why I put all the ref numbers on for you ) I'm sure someone can email it to you. Just been trying 1881 but no luck. She's not with the same family ( that would have been too easy ). I have 'family' in Paddington in 1881/1891 but mine are all in slums or tiny houses with about 20 to a room.......why can't mine be in the posh area like yours, even as housemaids..!! Esta |

Esta Thanks anyway, I can look it up when I next go to the FRC - you have given me the gen, for which I am very grateful. If it makes you feel better, Emily's mum and dad's address in Richmond in the commercial directories was 'Old Burying Ground' - they had a lovely view of the graves. Lou I'm getting very excited now! Fingers crossed. nell |

Wow! Back after watching ER and lots of progress on this thread! If you look at the image of the 1871 Timothys on Ancestry, it is actually the Smoothy family, so it looks like a match to me. Louise |
