Just checked...Corelli was born in J/F/M so that seems perfectly plausible. Do you think I should order the birth cert to check for sure if it's THE Clifford? |

without a doubt |

How much will that be? Jess look I'm really sorry. |

Bethany | Report | 17 Feb 2006 20:51 |
Jess just a quick question. If it is him and his name is Thomas, why on his marriage to Violet is he called Clifford? Do you think that odd? Also are you ignoring me?! |
|||
|
Unknown | Report | 17 Feb 2006 20:57 |
Jess wouldn't ignore anyone. She may be away from her computer ... spending time with her hubby etc. .... or she could be doing a lenghty lookup for someone else at the moment. She will come back to this thread as soon as she comes back on the board... Be patient ... she has been with you ! Elaine :-) Certificate's are £7 each if you order them from the GRO. using the Reference numbers given |

Yeah I know I'm being impatient but it feels like she's ignoring me because I've been away from the board, and she thinks I'm ungrateful for all her help. And I would never want her to feel that way! I've been ill yesterday and today. And like I said I'm very sorry for not being here... |

Beth, You do realise that we are all at home - like you, don't you ? We're not sitting in an office all together (some folks do think we are !!) Jess, could have gone for a long soak in the bath or anything !! ... it's Friday night, so I'm hoping that she is opening a bottle !! No one on here would go to the extreme of 'deliberately' ignoring anyone ... for whatever reason ! we are all like minded people who just help others as and when we can ! Elaine ;-) |

Bethany | Report | 17 Feb 2006 21:07 |
Lol I did think that...it's Friday night...maybe she wants a break! And also I have wondered, do some of you people work for GR? May sound like a stupid question but I'm intrigued! |
|||
|
Unknown | Report | 17 Feb 2006 21:12 |
No, none of us work for GR. We are all paying members just like you. ! We all do our own research whilst we help others .... I say WE ! lol, I have been too busy with my own research just lately to help anyone !! One day, you'll be in a position to help other people as well .... its very rewarding ! Elaine ;-). |

Bethany | Report | 17 Feb 2006 21:15 |
I bet it is rewarding! Especially when you've had a toughy like this mystery Clifford to find. Now it seems he's been discovered! As you seem to be an expert, do you think it possible for this Clifford to be born Thomas C Thynne and yet to be married as Clifford Thynne? Why isn't he Thomas on his marriage? |
|||
|
Unknown | Report | 17 Feb 2006 21:20 |
It could be .... highly likely ! but you do need to send for the certificate to be doubly sure. Problem back then, you didn't need identification to get married and could call yourself what you wanted. If Thomas C is Clifford - and he had always been known as Clifford, then the chances are that he gave the name Clifford on his wedding day. Now it's completely different - you need proof of who you are and everything ! You do need this cert ! And - be prepared to buy MANY more certificates. You can not do your family tree without buying a few certs along the way.! It IS an expensive hobby - unless you have a very rare surname - and that is a rare incident in itself ! Elaine ;-) |

Okay I'll order it in the morning. Are the indexes the numbers on the birth register? |
|||
|
Unknown | Report | 17 Feb 2006 21:29 |
No. The indexes are the 'lists' of Births, Marriages and Deaths. The GRO Reference number that you need is the (eg) 3b, 456 that Jess wouldd have left with the name etc. You MUST include this when you apply for the certificate. Go to this GRO Certificate Ordering site: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates Register and get a password etc ... then you can apply online using a Debit or Credit Card. You CAN also phone them and order over the phone ... and you can also apply via post, but the cost for these two latter option's is £8.50 per cert. Elaine ;-) |

Bethany | Report | 17 Feb 2006 21:32 |
Okay thankyou. Also, how do you know not to order EVERY cert that you come across...when do you know that you need to? Where is that line? |
|||
|
Unknown | Report | 17 Feb 2006 21:40 |
That's a difficult question to answer !! There will be Marriage certs especially ... where you don't know the brides surname - so you NEED to get either the marriage cert OR a child's birth cert to find out THAT info. Also, a spouse could have the same name as a few other people on the census ... and to go back further you NEED to know the Fathers name and occupation, so as to find the CORRECT family on a previous census etc. You WILL know when you come across a '' is this or is that ?' question !! There are plenty of people on here to help you along the way - to help you narrow down possibilities, but there will be times when you get one than option - and thjen you will NEED to purchase.! Not putting you off - but I have 378 certificates ..... purchased over the last 3 years ...... some I wanted but 95% of them I NEEDED ! Hope you have a part time job ? Elaine ;-) |

No I don't! See I think I'm in the situation now, not only with Thomas/Clifford. On the other side of my family, the Pyners, I know that my fathers grandad was Albert Pyner born in W.Ham in 1891 so that was easy to find as Pyner is quite a rare name. My dad also knows that his grandmother was called Maud. When I found the register for their marriage is said he married a Scott, so I looked up the Scott marriages and found that she was called Maud E Scott. I then started to look for the birth registration and found that there is no way to tell one Maud Elisa Scott W.Ham 1891 from Maud Ellen Scott W.Ham 1892...the list goes on...I'm right in thinking that I NEED a cert to go any further yes? Also, I need Thomas C Thynne's BIRTH cert as this will have his father's name yes? |

Okay thanks Elaine. Hope I wasn't impatient with you. I've been reading the thread about why people don't wait for replies and I too felt a pang of guilt since I think I can be a bit impatient...but I always say thankyou you just have to look back in this thread to see and I mean it too! Just think I may have annoyed Jess a little...here's hoping I haven't! Thanks again. Beth |
