Dear Friends, Can`t be sure, but have recently been given info regarding a George Durrell who went to prison for a month in November 1853 for neglect of wife and child but was given a pardon and released early. It`s possible that he and his wife, split up, but did not divorce, so the mystery for me is where did George go, and if it`s true that his daughter married a sailor which she did in 1887, he must have been alive,to allegedly cut her from his estate.I would be very grateful if anyone can figure out what went on here without using the George Durrell who died in 1865 as a reference point, because he is the wrong one. Any help would be most welcomed. Yours in success, Frustrated searcher,Glenn.

Dear friends, thankyou so much for this info. Richard i am told, did drown in London docks, and i will at some point get his death certificate should i be able to source where this will be. I am also pleased to know about this George who could well be my gt gt grandfarther, and could be the one who died in Edmonton.I cant believe it has taken so long to track him down, but need to be aware there was more than one George from my area of Portsmouth,i`ve even found a George who was at the New Inn IOW,looking for bricklayers ,and a George who died in Droxford area. Will keep you posted, but any help you can pass my way will be very much appreciated. Glenn

Not sure if this is the correct death as his date of birth is given as 1864 Durham but on closer inspection his age is given as 61on the original image not 51 so doesn't that make his birth 1854! it has been wrongly transcribed. Address given as 8 Hertford Street Portsmouth. Have sent you the original image by PM.

Few scenarios - as haven't found a marriage for William Rather and Mary Durrell
1. William Rather was married to someone else 2. George Durrell was still alive somewhere

Hi All, I know this may be boring now, but i would love to gain death info regarding George Durrell,my gt gt grandfarther who has become a complete mystery to me It has been brought to my attention that he could have been a Freemason so wondered if there were any masons who could check in the London archives from roughly 1853 till his unknown passing,to see if this is the case as he was a brickmaker from Portsea and i believe this would have been a trade where ecceptance was top of the list. Hope you can help, G Ford.

Glenn, I recently read part of the diary of a vicar from the late 19th century.
In it, he recorded a surprising number of burials of unidentified bodies - people who were perhaps further afield than their normal home area and had been involved in an accident or some other sudden death. People may have taken ill and died suddenly in woods, a field, river or whatever. Bearing in mind that people back then wouldn't be carrying driving licences, credit cards, or other ID etc and with communication back then not being what it is now it's easy to see how it could possibly happen.
I always bear this in mind when unable to find a death.

Dear Friends, a couple of bits that have come my way . I am told that on the 1861 census when George is living with his farther his wife Mary Durrell is a visitor at her uncle John Jacksons home,John Jackson sister is Charlotte Jackson my gt gt gt grandmother.John has a daughter who marries Alfred Smith who... is wait for it... a ships steward,so my George`s cousin`s hubby is a ships steward and Georges wife is visiting him. Can this be confirmed.
Also there is also possibility that George could have emigrated to OZ and became a chief steward on the Alexandra Ship. There is a lot of to-ing and fro-ing on the ship from Adelaide and other ports in Oz to Sydney from 1871 through to 1890.Mrs G DURRELL arrives in sydney in 1884 It was well documented i am told that men left there wife's to seek a better life abroad and the wife Joined years later
Can anyone confirm. Yours in success Glenn

Hi Astra, thankyou. I will keep this as a reference so i don`t go over old ground. I know it might sound daft but if you get a moment can you look for me to see when Thomas Owen re-appeared on the census forms after his death, because it was brought to my attention that it`s possible that george could have taken his name.I have to look at every option. So gratefull for your time and help. Yours in success Glenn Ford.

I think, with the greatest of respect Glenn that we proved before that it was Dunell.
The name appears to be Dunell and not Durrell unfortunately.
Mary A. Dunell Age: 40 Estimated birth year: abt 1841 Relation: Wife Spouse's name: George Dunell Gender: Female Where born: Jersey, Channel Islands Civil parish: St Brelade County/Island: Jersey Country: Channel Islands Street Address: Le Roux House Household Members: Name Age George Dunell 45>>>>Baker Mary A. Dunell 40 William Dunell 17 John Dunell 14 Edmund Dunell 3 George Collice 18
Someone has made an alteration to the 1891 so it would appear that the name is definitely Dunell and Find my Past have transcribed it wrongly in 1871. On Ancestry in 1871 it is Dunell and reads as such on the original Mary A Surrell [Mary A Dunell] Age: 49 Estimated birth year: abt 1842 Relation: Wife Spouse's name: George Surrell Gender: Female Where born: St. Brelade, Jersey, Channel Islands Civil parish: St Brelade Ecclesiastical parish: St Brelade Town: St Aubin County/Island: Jersey Country: Channel Islands Street Address: View image Condition as to marriage: View image Education: View image Employment status: View image Occupation: View image Registration district: Jersey Sub-registration district: H ED, institution, or vessel: 1 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age George Surrell 55 Mary A Surrell 49 John Surrell 23 Edmond Surrell 13 Clifford Surrell 7
1901 Living next door to son John who is now a baker Mary Ann Danell [Mary Ann Dunell] Age in 1901: 60 Estimated birth year: abt 1841 Gender: Female Where born: St. Brelade, Jersey, Channel Islands Civil parish: St Brelade Ecclesiastical parish: St Aubin Town: St Aubin County/Island: Jersey Household Members: Name Age Mary Ann Danell 60 Edmond Danell 23 Clifford Danell 17
George Dunell was born in Somerset. In 1861 he is in Jersey living with his brother Elias (a butcher) and his wife.
