My name is Marilyn Helen Freeman nee DUNNELL my father was Charles William DUNNELL (Bill), I was born in Raynes Park, London SW in 1953 and have 1 brother.
I believe, from one book I found, that the name DUNNELL means 'Dweller by a dark stream'!

Hi Marilyn, I am trying to research the Dunnell family for my Aunt. The branch I am looking back from is Frank Reginald Dunnell, born 1888 (one of 15 !), whose father was George William Dunnell, born 1853, & mother Alice Jane Frost, born 1853. Are these people any relatives of yours ?

Hi everyone, thank you all so very much for all your hard work, what lovely people you all are. I have one very difficult (for me, anyway) puzzle to solve now. Dorothea Ethel Dunnell born 1914 in Allahabad to Frank Reginald Dunnell and Elsie A Pay had a sister named Florence Lilian. There is no record of her birth anywhere, except on her death certificate, which gives dob as 3/7/17. She was by then Florence Lilian Harry, having married a Maurice H Harry in 1948. I have spent days searching every record I can think of, to no avail. The only reason I can think of is that perhaps Florence Lilian was unofficially "adopted" Any help or advice would be gratefully received Jenny

PM from Jen - have replied generally but nothing specific
Hi greyghost - I notice that you have added a few comments to my queries about the Dunnell family, could you please talk me through where I am supposed to ask a few more? I have placed a thankyou note underneath all the kind helpful comments, and asked another question at the same time, but with no answers forthcoming, I think I am in the wrong area! I know I have been a GR member for over 10 years, but I have never used this section before (that's my excuse ! thanks, Jenny

Many WW1 records were destroyed during WW2. Unfortunately that appears to have happened to Frank's - UNLESS he was still in the Army after 1920, in which case his records will still be with MOD. Medal rolls were stored elsewhere.
Full records may tell you where he was serving at the appropriate time or list children and when/where born
The Medal roll is dated 1920, possibly still serving?
Have a read of the following. £30 with application and may take a while to arrive

Thanks greyghost. I think I am going to join ancestry as well as being a member of GR, unless there is any other way to access the 1939 register?
I have successfully accessed the military service records before, for both of my parents. I think I will ask my aunt for a donation before I try for her granddad !

Plenty of members here have access to the 1939 register so post what it is you're looking for.
Depending on what and where your family lived Ancestry and Find My Past have different records. Have a look at their holdings before jumping one way or the other. Most people on here have membership of one of them, some to both.

The 1939 Register is also on FindMyPast, which also requires a subscription.
The 1939 on FMP seems to be a bit more up-to-date than the version on Ancestry - some records are still closed on Ancestry, but opened on FMP.
Otherwise, Ancestry versus FMP is pretty much six-and-half-a-dozen. Pros and cons on both sides.
And as GG says, lots of us here will be happy to look things up for you.
