This gentleman is my 4x Great Grandfather, Cheetham's scholar, calico printer, etc., etc. 1768 - 1836.
His second wife is SOPHIA HILTON 1785 - 1824, daughter of John Hilton etc., etc.
When John and Sophia married, Miles is stated to already be a widower at the age of c.21. It would seem that his first wife's name was Catherine Grierson, but I'm not 100% sure about that?
I'm guessing that she possibly died in childbirth but I can find no record of her birth, death, nor a possible baby dead or alive.
I'd be grateful for any help, please.

Did you notice that the baby Mary died at Captinfold in Castleton
Captain Fold is in or near Rochdale, Manchester, but Castleton is in Derbyshire!
To me, it looks as if Miles and Catharine had moved, and as there is no death on lancsopc for a Catharine Clayton, then it could be a little more difficult.

Age on such records is almost certainly simply ‘full’ which translates to ‘21’ when being transcribed........................

ErikaH suggested this burial for Catherine:
Catharine Clayton in the Cheshire, England, Select Bishop's Transcripts, 1576-1933 Name Catharine Clayton Gender Female Burial Date 11 Feb 1806 Burial Place St. Chad's Romiley, Cheshire, England FHL Film Number 1647367
"Romiley is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. Historically part of Cheshire . . ." [Wikipedia ]
The Cheshire/Manchester aspect is confusing.
Although the marriage record posted earlier is from Cheshire Marriage Licence Bonds And Allegations 1606-1905, Catherine Grierson married Miles in Manchester, and is described as "of Manchester" .
Catharine Grierson in the Manchester, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930 (Cathedral) Name Catharine Grierson Marriage Date 15 Oct 1798 Parish Manchester, St Mary, St Denys and St George Spouse's Name Miles Clayton Archive Roll 689

Oh, this is all very interesting and thank you for continuing to sleuth on my behalf.
I did in fact contact St. Chad's in Romiley and they very helpfully responded very quickly with a negative about Catherine's supposed burial there.
And now you have found both Miles and Catherine at Chorlton-on-Medlock buried together there. This is in the general area where we could have expected our ancestors to be buried/commemorated so an excellent result. THANK YOU.
Naughty Miles 'adjusting' his dob - probably to fit in with having such a young wife .... and it looks as if baby John didn't survive.
Always in awe of your researching skills. Thank you all again. :-)
