Argyllgran and ErikaH, thank you very much for all your help but I am now feeling rather guilty as I have all the information about Sidney's military life and about his half brother Harold. I couldn't tell you all the information I have about the Elsegoods and the marry-ins as there is reams and reams of it.
As far as Sidney's military records are concerned, I know it gives his father as Sidney on one of the papers but I think that was just an error on the part of the officer or clerk filling it in. His father was definitely James. Harold was his eldest half brother, born to father James and his first wife Mary Ann Willetts. I am not sure exactly when they were at Frensham Street but this family, like many others, moved around from one rented accommodation to another. They pretty much stayed within the Peckham/Camberwell area - Frensham Street is only about half a mile from Elcot Avenue where various family members lived at different times.
Sidney seems to have told the military that he was born at 23 Havil Street. In fact his birth certificate says 15 Havil Street but these small errors do occur.
Apart from knowing that Sidney married Sarah Ann, I haven't followed the Worsfolds any further so some of the things you found were new to me. I felt that branch of my tree was beginning to extend too far out. Sidney and Maude Alexandra were descended from a James Elsegood b. 1822, I am descended from his sister Elizabeth Elsegood b. 1824 and with each generation we grow further apart.
I am still keen to find out about Maude Alexandra. Why did James apparently have 2 daughters both named Maud(e)? What happened to her after 1901? What's her story?
Thank you again for your work on this conundrum.

You said, "The only one [ie - of Maude's relations ] I haven't found in the 1911 is Sidney (b 1882), the son of Olive Still . . ."
Here he is:
Sidney Elsgover [ Elsgood on image ] in the 1911 England Census Name: Sidney Elsgover Age in 1911: 32 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1879 Relation to Head: Lodger Gender: Male Birth Place: CAMBERWELL, London, England Civil Parish: Camberwell County/Island: London Country: England Street Address: Registered Lodging House, 20 and 22 Highstreet, Peckham S E Marital status: Single Occupation: Carman Registration District Number: 27 Sub-registration District: Peckham South ED, institution, or vessel: 24-26 Piece: 2594 Household Members: Name Age John Fulthorpe 58 Lucy Fulthorpe 48 James Terrell 45 John Pumphery 36 George Weston 68 William Chittenden 50 Richard Price 50 Sidney Elsgover 32 [and many other lodgers - all men ]
He's also there in the 1921 Census (but not the 1921 Electoral Roll), with John Fullthrope 1844, , Lucy Fullthrope 1864, and 67 others
Sidney Ellsgood 1881 Camberwell, London, England Camberwell Camberwell London, Surrey
However, oddly, he's at 31 Acorn Place in 1919, per ER, and from at least 1927 onwards .
Still no sign of Maude Alexandra.
Re Maud Lilian - have you found her in 1891? I can't see her anywhere.
She's not with her father James, nor with the Elsegood grandparents, James and Catherine. As far as I can see, the Willetts grandparents both died before 1891. She didn't emigrate until 1898.

Maybe a possibility for Maud Lilian in 1891 - if mistakenly listed as Mary:
Mary Elsgood in the 1891 England Census Name: Mary Elsgood Gender: Female Age: 16 Relationship: Servant Birth Year: 1875 Birth Place: Camberwell, Surrey, England Civil parish: Cheltenham Ecclesiastical parish: St Luke Residence Place: Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England Registration district: Cheltenham Sub registration district: Cheltenham ED, Institution or Vessel: 47 Neighbors: Piece: 2048 Folio: 115 Household Members (Name) Age Relationship Mary Jones 40 Head - Bow Dora Jones 2 Daughter - Cheltenham Florence Merchant 15 Servant - Cheltenham Elizabeth Gare 29 Half Sister - Camberwell Muriel Gare 2 Half Niece (Niece) - Camberwell Mary Elsgood 16 Servant - domestic nurse

Just for helpers' interest - SuffolkVera's earlier thread about Maud Lilian:

Sorry Argyllgran, I have only just managed to get back to the thread. I had also found the Mary Elsegood in Cheltenham and I do think that is her. All the details except her first name are correct. I did wonder how she got to Cheltenham but the half-sister to the head of household and her little girl were both born in Camberwell, so could well have known Maude/Mary from there. You will have seen that she is entered as a servant with the profession of nurse so I suspect she went with them to look after the little girl.
Just to be sure I've checked that there wasn't a Mary Elsegood birth registered between 1870 and 1880 and checked on the 1881 and 1901 censuses and I can't find a likely Mary.so, on the balance of probabilities, I think it is Maude in Cheltenham.
Thank you for finding Sidney in the 1911. I don't know how I missed that one. I know the surname gets spelled in lots of different ways so if I can't find the person I'm looking for I usually put Els* for the name and trawl through everything that comes up. Even then I got caught out once when the name had gone down as Earlsgood.
I really appreciate your help and interest. They are a fascinating family. I just wish there weren't so many of them called James!
