There is no birth of a William Alfred Moore whch would fit with the DOB 17 Oct 1888 - but DOBs in the 1939 Register are often not accurate.

As well as my question re what the marriage cert says about William's father -
what was William's occupation at marriage?

His birth year is inaccurate in 1939 - the date and month match the RN records

The RB record says his occuption was Fish Frier.

He had dark brown hair, brown eyes, and dark complexion.
He had tattoos on his right forearm, of a bird, clasped hands, and "Love to May".
A ship and a snake on his left forearm

He joined the RN in 1906, but there's nothing on his record after 1908.
Discharged at his own request.
He was an "Off Stew 2cl " - I assume that means an Officer's Steward 2nd class.

The 1911 posted by ErikaH for the RN stoker born in Cosham doesn't seem to match with a steward born in Portsmouth, who apparently left the RN in 1908.

Unless he rejoined, and the census has his birthplace wrong.


It would help to know the details from the marriage cert.

I've had a re-think on the Stoker and deleted the info, as the other record is a much more likely match for 1939 census, in view of birth date

I wish the poster had said which grandfather he was looking for........................ :-S :-S :-S

??? Before joining the RN, maybe ?? Maybe the reason for his tattoo "love to May" ???

I don't see a Moore/Tilley marriage for his parents.

Also not seeing any other Moore/Tilley births in the Portsmouth area.

There are some born in Leicester -
- but that family is in Leicester in 1891 - and there's no son William with them, so not related.
Those parents married in Leicester - so no Portsmouth connection.

I wonder if he joined the army after leaving the RN - he was certainly in the RAOC in 1939.

Not sure he was actually in the RAOC in 1939 - rather that he worked with/for them. He would have been aged 50/51 at that point.
