Where and when did his wife die?

Have you looked for census info for the family?

When and where was the brother born? Was he registered as Francesco?

These graves maybe linked into family.
But if he died aged 20/21 years, this won't be
Joseph Miller's grave.
Joseph miller was born 1860. :-)

What is your reason for thinking that he had a brother Francesco?
Is there any reason why his parents would have been in Malta?

Admittedly, I can't find his father in the UK after 1861, although there are a couple of possibilities for his mother - but Mary Miller is a common name.

Sarah Marie Miller, born 7 Nov 1883, is on the private Ancestry tree of someone named Beatrice1903, who lives in New Zealand.
Name of tree: Bunty's Arboretum.

Have you been in touch with her?

She also has Alexander and Mary Ann on her tree. But no Francesco.

ErikaH Report 12 Nov 2020 20:57

When Sarah married, what was the info on the cert about her father?

When did she marry? Where? And to whom?

Joseph joined the Navy in 1876

You say "Discharged from navy 1883, medical reason."

He was actually discharged in 1893, and the medical reason was diabetes.

ADDED
Insulin wasn't in use until c1921.

"The discovery and purification of insulin for clinical use between 1921–1922 by a group of researchers in Toronto—Frederick Banting, J.J.R. Macleod, Charles Best, and James Collip—paved the way for treatment. The patent for insulin was assigned to the University of Toronto in 1923 for a symbolic dollar to keep treatment accessible.
In regard to diabetes insipidus, treatment became available before the causes of the disease were clarified. The discovery of an antidiuretic substance extracted from the pituitary gland by researchers in Italy (A. Farini and B. Ceccaroni) and Germany (R. Von den Velden) in 1913 paved the way for treatment. By the 1920s, accumulated findings defined diabetes insipidus as a disorder of the pituitary. "

The last location mentioned on his service record is a village in Co Mayo, Ireland, but that may simply be where his last ship docked

Where does the name Francesco come from?

Have you any documentary proof of his existence?

Mary Ann with her parents in 1851? I wonder if she is transcribed as Martha so possibly another avenue to look for them after 1861.

Ancestry's version of 1861 mistranscribes her name as Margret - though it's clearly Mary A on the image, and correctly on FMP's version as posted earlier by Alviegal.
