I am requesting help please in finding the marriages (if any) and the deaths of
Sarah McManus White 23 Feb 1874,Styles,Antrim.NI
and her sister Margaret White 30 March 1879,Styles, Antrim.NI.

Their parents are James White 1847 to June 1918(Belfast) and Mary White nee Young who died 20 June 1889 Church Street, Antrim. I have no date of birth for her.

There are other siblings, Annie,Mary,Ellen,Joseph,Matilda and Martha, I don't need any information on these other siblings as I already have it.

Sarah was 15 when her mother died and Margaret was 10, and I have been unable to find out what happened to them.

I know all about the others, as I am in contact with there families, but none of us know anything about what happened to Sarah McManus and Margaret.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Look here fro BMD info

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=32&Itemid=117

Also, look for them in censuses

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Both sites are FREE

We did find that census ArgyllGran but the "Elizabeth" did not seem to fit.

We did look on both those sites ErikaH, but couldn't find them on there.

A lot of the rest of the family moved to the Liverpool area, for work presumably, apart from one who went to USA.

Unfortunately, the names Sarah White and Margaret White are so common that it's a needle in a haystack .

For instance, there's this Margaret, but no way of knowing if she could be the right one:

Margaret White
in the Web: Ireland, Census, 1901
Name: Margaret White
Gender: Female
Marital status: Single
Age: 21
Birth Date: abt 1880
Birth Place: Co Antrim
Residence Date: 31 Mar 1901
House Number: 54
Residence Place: Donegall Pass, Windsor Ward, Antrim, Ireland
Relation to Head: Boarder
Occupation: Laundry
Religion: Church of Ireland
Literacy: Read and write

EDIT:

Although having said that, I now see that irishgenealogy.ie shows only the one Margaret White born in Antrim 1878-82

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 21 Aug 2020 10:21

Check 'search all member trees' to see if anyone else on here is researching them

The woman could have added 'Elizabeth' to her name for some reason

The 'Mcmanus' element isn't exactly commonplace and the age matches the birth date you have given

Is her religion 'right'?

Deborah

Deborah Report 21 Aug 2020 10:24

Yes, as you say, both censuses could be them, the ages are fairly accurate, I was hoping the McManus part of the name would help, but it hasn't so far.

Probably another one where I will hope to find them on the 1921 census when we get it.

ArgyllGran Report 21 Aug 2020 10:25

Re "needle in a haystack", as well as only one Margaret White born in Antrim 1878-82, there were only two Sarah Whites born in Antrim 1873-75, per irishgenealogy.ie.

The "other" Sarah (1873) has no middle name.

Deborah Report 21 Aug 2020 10:30

Just checked members trees on here, nothing.

Thing is, I have their baptism records, or at least the Irish equivalent, its their deaths and possible marriages I cant find.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 21 Aug 2020 10:31

Where was the father in 1901 and 1911?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 21 Aug 2020 10:39

The names are so common that unless Sarah's middle name was listed there's no easy way to know if they married.

If they went to England, there are loads of marriages for women named Sarah M White and Margaret White - but without buying all the certs (obviously impossible) there's no way of knowing if any of them could be the right people.

And if they married, we therefore don't know the surnames, so can't tell when they died.

If they stayed in Ireland, neither of them had married in Antrim by 1940 - as you'll already know.

Cant find the 1911 census at the moment, he was with one of the other siblings Annie and her family, will have to look for that again, from memory he was only with Annie (Campbell, was her married name)

Ok thank you for trying ladies, I really appreciate your help, I have to go out shortly, will come back to it later.

I did also find loads of records for Sarah M White. Thought the McManus would help but it didn't.

Not sure about James in 1901, will look at that to later.

Will come back to it later, thank you.

In 1901 James White was living at 52 Emerson Street, Shankhill,Antrim, with his (now married) daughter Annie Campbell nee White her husband James Campbell and their 6 children, religion stated as Presbyterian.

I know this him because we are in touch with the Campbell line of the family.

We think all the children were farmed out, the younger ones anyway, when Mary White nee Young died in 1889.

That's the one, we found James as a boarder in Belfast in 1911, but now I cant find the census, I am sure neither of the children were with him.

Not that it helps, but one of Sarah and Margarets siblings, Matilda Orr was living with James brother, John White in 1901 at Kirkdale, Liverpool, with their 4 sons, Samuel, John H, James and George. Matilda was 17.

Just want to correct myself re the above post, I think James was in Belfast in 1911, but he was boarding, am still looking for the census. Was trying to answer Erika's question re, where was James in 1901 and 1911.

Deborah

Deborah Report 21 Aug 2020 17:03

You have found it, thank you ArgyllGran.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 21 Aug 2020 17:17

Whose husband was the K Jameson, son-in-law, of Whiteabbey, who was the informant for James's death cert?

That's assuming I've got the right death:

SR District/Reg Area - Belfast
Death of JAMES WHITE in 1918
Name JAMES WHITE
Date of Death 1918 [ 14 June 1918 ]
Group Registration ID 5195675
