After a few days putting info together I have now found with the help of some kind people on here 8 generations of the above, I found he had been married once before to May E Duckett dob 27.10.1911, they were married sept qt 1936, I've trawled through 10 years of bmd and can't find any children for the couple or a death for May either, Then jumping 2 generations back to Williams Grandfather Joseph Walmsley born 1874 and married to Margaret Ann Milner 1 daughter Hannah, comes up to this couple with an adopted son to Rose bolton. I can't find anything on Rose Bolton other than a poss birth c1877 at Preston but not sure if there are any links to Preston with the Walmsley family
Joseph Walmsley married Dorothy Ann Robinson and was the son of John Walmsley whom I can't find anything because I assume rightly that he was born before 1837 which is when most records started. Can anyone tell me how to find out information before 1837 for bmd.
All this is for a family friend who knew very little about his father William Milner Walmsley and I've been doing my own family tree for a awhile and come to a dead end with it so he asked if I'd have a go at trying to find info on his dad and other family members, he's recently come across a son he's not seen for almost 45 years so it would be amazing to be able to fill him in with more info.

Just seen the above additions, thank you ErikaH and alviegal, I'll go through that lot in abit and see if I can update the hand written tree I've done for my neighbour, though I'm expecting him coming round later this evening to see if there's anything to tell him, looks like he's going to have to wait a while longer now for the tree to have extra branches added to it
