Thank you all for your help.
I realise he's 'missing' from family 1901 (at 17yrs). (various possibilities for 'where')

Looks promising that could be his birth - as 1881 shows 'Ellen Collins' as 'mother-in-law' - (to his father James) -all living same household.

Sorry I have no more info - wouldn't know of their deaths.

Problem is there are other Joseph Bryan born about the same time so if he didn’t use his second name it’s identifying the right one

.Many thanks for your interesting findings - though I wonder if/why 'my' Joseph was in Yorkshire. Hopefully (my) Joseph Patrick Collins Bryan can still be traced!

There has been a family rumour of ancestor/s going out to Aus -from 'a long way back' - slight possibility it may have been him.(?) I'm trying to exhaust all attempts in the UK before I start in Aus.

thanks again - Valerie

Thank you very much for these findings. Yes - that does seem to be his parents marriage - especially as the 'Collins' name has shown up on census (as 'mother-in-law')

(I'm not too sure about the Scottish connection - - but thank you anyway.)

From Wiki

St Joseph's College is situated on the Craigs Road in Dumfries, south west Scotland. It is a Roman Catholic secondary school. The school began as a Catholic boys' boarding school run by Marist Brothers. It is near St. Michael's Primary School and is one of four secondary schools in Dumfries.

St Joseph's College was founded in 1875 as both a boarding school and the first Novitiate for the training of Marist Brothers in Great Britain. Brother Walfrid, the man who founded Celtic Football Club, also helped to found the school.[1] The school became part of the state school system in 1981, but still accepts Catholic students as priority. The school was a boys' school to begin with, and the first female pupils were admitted as day pupils in the early 1970s.
