It could be that the 3 births in Cardiff, Colwyn Bay and Rochdale were because he was in army barracks at that time. |

He was definitely a civilian in 1901 and 1911, he left the Navy in 1888 I think after just a few months service in Portsmouth. He didn't enlist for WW1 until he was 46. |
