I was just coming back to add that both Florence and Emma married stating their maiden names were Coldham.

Fossey is correct, my niece remembered seeing a daughter in Wiltshire called Doff. So I went trawling for births and found the 1945 Chippenham birth for Dorothy.

Something dire must have happened for the girls to use the alternate name. Oooooh your suggestion about him already being married is intriguing :-D

Hi Gran thanks for your replies too. I just found his Naval Records as you posted

When the short birth cert was discovered obviously this provoked questions. These have lain unanswered until I offered to look at the details day before yesterday.

The family were covering something up if there wasn't sudden deaths of both parents when the girls were young and they were raised by another family.

My nephew and niece will be really excited to read this thread and I cannot thank everyone enough.

I will leave it open just in case anything else comes to light.

You found the daughter Dorothy's birth in 1945.
There was also a son, Derek, in 1943, who sadly died the same year.

His birth reg is correctly transcribed on Ancestry, but FreeBMD wrongly has it as being in Chipping Norton, with the wrong volume number. I've submitted a postem.

Oooh thanks for the latest replies, I will be kept busy today.

Had a long chat with Nephew last night and from all the help you have given the first deductions are:

He started first family with Clara near London.

Second family using the surname Dale he established in Lancashire.

He reverted to the original surname of Coldham by 1920, the 3 children from the Lancashire family used the Coldham name when they married.

Why Esther gave birth in Cardiff, Colwyn Bay and Rochdale is really intriguing. Especially as in 1901 she was living in Rochdale and 1911 in Bolton. Bearing in mind what travel complications were in place in the early 1900s. Esther states her place of birth as Swansea, so more digging.
