Please can you tray and assist me?

I am tryin g to trace the above person who was born in Country Armagh , Ireland in 1885 .

He moved to South Africa and died in Bloemfontein aged 82 in 1967.


Unfortunately have been unable to trace his parents so do not have too much info.

When did he go to SA?

Have you considered getting his birth cert?

Have you looked at the FREE 1901 Irish census?

Not sure when he came to SA. I was hoping to find more info before getting birth certificate.

Have looked at a couple of sites and only found one J.A. Patterson born about 1884 in County Armagh. Will try Irish Census.

Why do you think he was born in Ireland? Do you have any documentary evidence to support the idea?

The baptism posted above matches the age at death

You could get a copy of the marriage certificate to find out his father’s name.

Have looked at Irish records, ( FMP, census, and irish gen.ie) but he may have left before 1901 census ( and certainly did before 1911) and no birth to match that year in Armagh at least, nor an obvious travel record , several of the name but not right age or likely to be the one.

GRONI has no birth results for the name in the time-frame

The GRONI index only records first names, it does not record middle names or initials unfortunately. There were 6 births reg in 1885, but between 1884 - 1886 there were 17. Obviously some of these could be eliminated by looking at the registration districts.

There are 6 registration districts within Co Armagh, but out of all the births 1884-1886 only 1 birth in Co Armagh registered at Lurgan 8/5/1885. This one probably had a sister reg in same area, Emma born 30/1/1888. Can't see any other siblings nor a marriage for parents using those surnames.

ADDED: forget this one, it only costs 1 credit to get the rest of the index and he was James Henry Patterson. So no births in Armagh in the right timeframe unless it has been badly transcribed.

I have done further limited research and found that James Alexander Patterson was born about 1880 and not 1885 and could have been born in Castleblaney Ireland between Jan and March of that year. Still have not found exact date of birth.

That doesn't tally with his age at death. You can't manipulate the facts to suit your theories

Have you actually looked at the baptism posted on here on Aug 17th?

And you haven't said WHY you think he was born in Ireland................

Why don't you simply get a copy of his marriage cert? That should name his father
