Oh, yes, I'd forgotten about Betty and Jack.

The trouble is - Elizabeth, Betty, John, Jack, Maggie, Margaret and Thomas Davies are all such very common names, as is Davies.

And even if Thomas was in Merthyr in 1911, it doesn't mean he stayed there later, so that's not a definite clue.

Are Betty and Jack's years of birth shown on the family tree, Frances?

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 8 Oct 2018 18:20

I was looking for Elizabeth and John, not just Betty and Jack. :-D

I'm so grateful to you all for the work you are putting in for me.
I think that we have advanced to this extent.
It is most likely our Tom in Merthyr. I don't know ( from family accounts ) the name of his wife, but did you notice that there was a Maggie Davies also in the same digs in Merthyr? A marriage in 1876 is not him- he wasn't born until 1886
I don't know any more about Betty and Jack-its just those two names written like that on the family tree.
I rang the archives today. I was told that they didn't have any more information about Tom, but that in 1917, the son of Highgate ( a Jones) was killed.) When I told him that it seems that Tom moved away for work he said that this could be the reason there is no more information so no Regiment and no detailed date of death.I am left questioning whether 1916 was correct but at this stage I am drawing closer to a blank.
I have a few things to chase up which I am doing but finding the descendants of Betty and Jack could make all the difference.
Thank you very much for the information about Ellis. We have a lovely photograph of his wedding.
I'll be back if there is any progress- in the meantime thank you once again.

I haven't checked but I think the 1876 marriage was meant to be Tom's parents (David + Jane) ???

Maggie Davies in 1911 is stated to be single, as is Thomas - so maybe just a coincidence.
Unless he married a Davies, of course - though I don't see such a marriage in that area.

Her birthplace is given as Troedyshire, Glamorgan. Troedyrhiw on image .

Thomas (the one who died in 1918) joined up in Tredegar - just along the road from Merthyr.

Duh! Sorry! I was wondering why someone thought he had married in 1876. Yes I knew his parents were David and Jane and Jane WAS a Roberts . The eldest child of whom I am aware was born in1877 ( Elizabeth) . She died in 1899 which may be why Tom named his daughter Elizabeth/Betty

Ellis Davies MMN Roberts was actually born 1878

The family tree says 1926? but I know where he is buried ( in the cemetery in Llan).

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 9 Oct 2018 18:28

I'm sure you would have said if Tom's wife's name was on the family tree, as Betty and Jack are named??

Just thought I'd ask!

That is what I found :

Mr, Ellis Davies, headmaster of Croesor Council School, who died while gathering snowdrops, was buried yesterday at Festiniog cemetery. All the schools closed for teachers and scholars attend. The funeral was the largest seen at Festiniog.

Yes I would have- no it isn't and that has implications for finding his service record. If I find someone I think is him I won't be able to cross check it if his next of kin is a wife I don't know of. I'm more keenly aware of this because earlier this year we finally found another casualty from the Great War- a " Jones" and we had been looking for him for years. We knew we had the right person when the cwgc site had my husband's great-grandparents as his next of kin.
My mother-in law has a fairly extensive family tree but didn't tell us about it during her lifetime and so we never had the chance to ask her questions about it. I am astonished at how much she discovered in the days before the internet- and she was a Jones- married and maiden name. Nevertheless and perhaps because she was an only child some of the information such as dates seems to have been a best guess. It surprises me that she didn't have a family bible where all of this was written or her father's war record( he survived and was invalided back home) or any of her family's medals.
Once more-thank you so much and if you have any other suggestions please keep them coming.

Dea- Thank you SO much- I didn't know about this and it has reduced me to tears.! I knew he was well respected and he married late in life to a Mrs Jeannie Crampton a widow with three children whose husband had died in th States . She and one of her daughters are also buried in Llan. Llan is the local name for Llanffestiniog which is where the original settlement was. Blaenau Ffestiniog which is what most people would associate with the name" Ffestiniog" , only came into being on the discovery of slate there.
As for the funeral being the largest seen that speaks volumes as Llan has had its share of quarry accidents and also many family tragedies- near the family graves you have one family who lost five children under 12. Life was hard and poor and difficult in this mountain community.
I would never have known this information you provided- I am very grateful.

Oh Frances - I did not realise that this information could be so significant to anyone.

Very pleased to be of help and very happy to help further if needed.

Just ask!!!
