Surrey Mirror 12 May 1939 -

Arrears of £287 - when Michael Joseph Conway, a Reigate painter, appeared on warrant at Reigate Police court yesterday (Thursday) for being in arrear with regard to maintenance of his wife and children, the Clerk stated that the arrears, under a 17s 6d a week order made in 1928, now amounted to £287 18s 6d. Directing an adjournement of the case so long as Conway paid 22s 6d a week (including 5s 0ff the arrears) the Mayor (Alderman HJ Hamblen) intimated that, subject to regular payments, the Bench were prepared to remit £250 of the amount outstanding, leaving the arrears to be met at £37 18s 6d. Conway, who had been out of work for a long period, but was now in casual employment, promised to do his best. Of his seven children, the Clerk said, four were now over 16, and did not come under the order.

Surrey Mirror 16 november 1928

A Husband's Delinquency - Michael joseph Conway, 2 Upper West Street, Reigate at the Reigate Borough Bench on Monday before the Mayor (Mr Temple Newell) and Mr TS Marriage was charged on a warrant with failing to comply with an order made on October 11th in respect of the maintenance of his wife, Elizabeth Annie Conway, South Albert Road, Reigate and her seven children, of which she was granted custody. The order was for 10s a week for the wife and 2s per week in respect of each child, and the arrears amounted to £5 10s - Evidence of arrest was given by P.C. Ayers. The wife stated that since the order was made her husband had paid nothing on the order. At the time the order was made he had been employed on work on the roads, his wages being £2 17s 9d a week. As far as she knew, he was still in work. He had written to her telling her he was willing to keep the children, but he refused to keep her. The prisoner who wore the uniform of the Fire Brigade, said he had only done 5 days work since the order was made, and was now unemployed. He had been paid at the rate of 10s a day. He stated that he was willing to pay the arrears due on the maintenance of the children, £3 12s. Prisoner on this undertaking was discharges, the amount owing being paid later the same day.

Well, I think that proves that we have the right man on the 1939 register.

I'm just not finding a Michael Conway birth in Ireland to match the DOB given on the 1939 register.

Wow, you lovely people are just amazing!!!! I thank you so very much for all of your efforts, and this has made sense of some of the mysteries in the family.
Now I wonder if he was the Michael born in Newcastle? because he's obviously a bit of a scally so could have altered his actual birth date as well.
Blessings Ingrid

? If day and month, but not year were correct on the 1939

and if correct - 1901 Ireland census shows aged 26 b 1885. But the year is more likely to be 1884 (just 1901 - 26 = 1885, but would cover only birth 1st Qtr 1885, leaving ¾ of 1884 to play with)

1943 Q4 death aged 59 would fit with a September 1884 birth

(Perhaps whoever registered the death knew correct age)

Do you have the marriage certificate for declared ages in 1917?

The 1891 Patrick in Newcastle is a Labourer

I have the marriage certificate and he states his age as 28 years and Elizabeth's as 26 years.

I don't think he's the Newcastle man. If father's name was Patrick and he was a farmer then I think Michael was more likely born in Ireland. Loads of farmers in Ireland but we would more likely think of them as crofters or small holders.
