I have been contacted by David who is searching for this lady, can anyone help please?
'I am trying to find information on my great grandma, Annie Brough. The only thing i have to go on is she was born about 1891 and had a child, named Charles Henry Ricmond.. She was a domestic servent.
As far as I can tell she was originally from Macclesfield, but ended up in Bolsover, Chesterfield where she had my grandad. I do have a copy of his birth certificate, but there is no father on it.'

EDIT - PLEASE IGNORE THIS RECORD AS THIS ANNIE WAS MARRIED
There is this Annie on the 1939 register in Chesterfield (no Charles recorded though unless he is one of the closed records:-
Brough Household (4 People) 55 Saint Helins Street , Chesterfield M.B., Derbyshire, England
FIRST NAME(S) LAST NAME(S) DOB SEX OCCUPATION MARITAL STATUS SCHEDULE SCHEDULE SUB NUMBER
Annie Brough 04 Oct 1892 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married 144 1 Derek F Brough 14 Oct 1920 Male Template Maker Boiler Construction & Engineering Widowed 144 2 Sorry, this record is officially closed. Check if you can open a closed record. Fanny Frearson 09 Mar 1867 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Widowed 144 4
Although the transcription says she is married, on the image it actually has widow.

That Annie's married name is Brough. Presumably Brough is a maiden name as the son has the same surname and no father is listed on the BC.

There is also this Annie Brough in the 1911 census who could be a possibility. Notice that she has a brother called Charlie - perhaps she named her son after him? :-

I wonder if this could be a possibility for the father of Annie's son (illigitimate children were often given their father's full names as forenames):-
First name(s) Charles Henry Last name Richmond Birth year 1892 Birth quarter 1 Registration month - Mother's maiden name Siddall District Chesterfield County Derbyshire Country England Volume 7B Page 680 Record set England & Wales Births 1837-2006 Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Subcategory Civil Births
If so then this looks like the above Charles in the 1911 census:-
1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription 93 Poolsbrook Staveley Chesterfield, Staveley, Derbyshire, England
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Birth place Occupation
Charles Henry Richmond Head Single Male 19 1892 Derbys Staveley Miner Pony Driver In Pit<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Alice Richmond Mother Widow Female 63 1848 Derbys Staveley Jonathan Richmond Grandson - Male 12 1899 Derbys Staveley School John Dunn Boarder Single Male 30 1881 Durham An Parish Also Miner Hewer Florence Ada Bytheway Boarder's Wife Married Female 21 1890 Derbys Staveley George Bytheway Boarder's Son - Male 3 1908 Derbys Staveley Gladys Bytheway Boarder's Daughter - Female 1 1910 Derbys Staveley
If this is a possibility then perhaps he couldn't marry Annie because he seems to be head of the household and was looking after his widowed mother and a nephew.

That's a very good find, kathleen! I suspect you may be right.
I've sent a message to David so he can look at this thread. We still haven't identified his Annie, maybe he has other info we can use.

Hi. Many many thanks for all your replies and help me find information on my great grandma.
The only "facts" that i have so far are :- She had a son who was born Charles Henry Richmond Brough 28/8/1918. there isn't a fathers name on his birth certificate. It also looks like he was born at home.. She was a house keeper (domestic) She lived at that time at Bolsover (although that might be Shuttlewood just outside Bolsover)
One of the things that may be a "possibility", is I found a Banns of marriage between a George Richmond and an Annie Brough with a marriage date of 28/10/1921 I am lead to believe my Annie died young, about 28-33yo, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Charles Henry Richmond had an older brother called George. I wonder if this is the George in the Banns you found. Perhaps he felt he would be looking after his brother's son????
However I can't find a record of a marriage between George and Annie.
What was the address on the birth certificate for Annie's son Charles Henry Richmond Brough? Was it the same address that Annie was at in the 1911 census?
You give two different dates for a marriage to George Richmond (1915 and 1921) but I can't find a marriage for either of these dates.

Thank you all again. I'm heading to the funeral directors tomorow (Thursday) to see if they have the service registry for Annie. This is because there have been two fires where the records were held, and not many records servived. She's not making life very easy for me is she..... Also, if my research is correct, she had a daughter called Edith Annie Richmond. Born 28/10/1923. Again if my research is correct, Annie died either during child birth or soon after as her date of death is also 1923. Looks like Edith lived from 1923 to 2010 firstly in Chesterfield then moved to Australia. She married George Gilbert 18/10/1947.
