Thank you in advance for your ideas. I'm trying to find information on Samuel Lake, son of John Lake (1815-1886) and Elizabeth Pook (1816-1876). The family are from Macclesfield area, Cheshire, England and Samuel is the eldest of several children (Samuel, Hannah, John, Elizabeth, Stephen, James and Eliza Lake) |

Thanks yes, I think that is definitely the family. Samuel seems to have moved out by the time of the 1851 census when he would have been 16, so that seems reasonable. If he was the mariner who married Mary Connor, perhaps he left home in his early teens and headed for sea?? I'm not sure how to trace him after the 1841 census. |

That's a good thought. I wonder if there is a death record of a Samuel lake before 1868? I'll have a look. A suggestion was made above of a death in 1885, but not sure if that's him. |

Seems like a definite possibility. Might have to order some certificates to find out. Can anyone see him in an 1851 or 1861 census? I wonder if he had any kids? |

Oops, maybe we are not on the right track. This record says the Samuel Lake who died in Macclesfield in 1862 was 71 years old which doesn't add up. |

Maybe. It's really hard to know for sure isn't it. I am a descendant of Hannah Lake (daughter of John Lake and Elizabeth Pook) and the family legend has that she and her husband followed one of her siblings to Australia. |

If he died in 1850, that would explain why he seems to disappear off the census records. |

That makes more sense Mary as the John Lake marriage to Elizabet Pook took place in Devon and all their children were subsequently born in that area: |

That's really interesting Dea, I have noticed heaps of the names keep coming up in Devon but I had discounted them because I thought I knew Hannah Lake (the second child, first daughter) was born in Macclesfield and that's where she met her husband Isaac Hudson Burgess. I'll have to check my records - maybe I've been making assumptions because that's where she got married and actually I should be looking at the Devon records. |
