Just to tie off this thread. Thank you all for your help. For any future readers, regarding my person of interest "Samuel Lake", we have concluded: Samuel Lake, eldest son of John Lake and Eliza Johnson of Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. Born 14 September 1834 (3 months after his parents marriage on 24 June 1834). He was baptised 26 June 1837. As far as I can conclude, he died in 1850 at the age of 16, although I am not certain if anyone can correct or confirm. His younger sister Hannah and younger brother James both emigrated to Australia.
Thanks again.

Thanks I think that all fits. Also the 1841 Census which I believe is the same family, has two men with surname Johnson in the same household (possibly uncles?)
Eliza Leak Female 25 1816 Cheshire, England Transcription Samuel Leak Male 6 1835 Cheshire, England Transcription Hannah Leak Female 3 1838 Cheshire, England Transcription Thomas Johnson Male 20 1821 Cheshire, England Transcription Samuel Johnson Male 15 1826 Cheshire, England
I don't know where I got Elizabeth Pook from (certainly a lot of family trees on ancestry.com list Elizabeth Pook as Hannah Lake's Mum) but I now believe she was Eliza Johnson who married John Lake from Macclesfield.
Thanks again.

That family on 1851 shows that Elizabeth was 'Johnson' - details posted by Maryb on 1st page:
LAKE, HANNAH JOHNSON Order GRO Reference: 1837 S Quarter in MACCLESFIELD UNION Volume 19 Page 7
LAKE, JAMES JOHNSON Order GRO Reference: 1849 M Quarter in MACCLESFIELD UNION Volume 19 Page 127
LAKE, STEPHEN JOHNSON Order GRO Reference: 1846 D Quarter in MACCLESFIELD UNION Volume 19 Page 120
LAKE, ELIZABETH JOHNSON Order GRO Reference: 1844 S Quarter in MACCLESFIELD UNION Volume 19 Page 185
Can't just see John at the moment but the others are all there!
So sign of a Samuel as he was born before registration (and also before their marriage) - IF this is the correct family ??

I have looked at a copy of Hannah Lake's original death certificate. Definitely says birth in 1837, Macclesfield, Cheshire. Father John Lake Mother Eliza (last name illegible ??? Matheson)

The 1851 Census suggests the kids were born in Macclesfield.
Name Hannah Lake Age 14 Estimated Birth Year abt 1837 Relation Daughter Father's Name John Lake Mother's Name Eliza Lake Gender Female Where born Macclesfield, Cheshire, England Civil parish Macclesfield Ecclesiastical parish Macclesfield Phillimore Ecclesiastical Parish Maps 1016 Town Macclesfield County/Island Cheshire Country England Registration district Macclesfield Sub-registration district West Macclesfield ED, institution, or vessel 5o Household schedule number 127 Piece 2160 Folio 345 Page number 34 Household Members Name Age John Lake 38 Eliza Lake 35 Hannah Lake 14 John Lake 9 Elizabeth Lake 7 Stephen Lake 5 James Lake 2
I'll have to regroup - perhaps the mother of Samuel, Hannah, John, Elizabeth, James and Eliza was not Elizabeth Pook ?? Elizabeth Johnson.
Keep you posted. Thanks

That's really interesting Dea, I have noticed heaps of the names keep coming up in Devon but I had discounted them because I thought I knew Hannah Lake (the second child, first daughter) was born in Macclesfield and that's where she met her husband Isaac Hudson Burgess. I'll have to check my records - maybe I've been making assumptions because that's where she got married and actually I should be looking at the Devon records. Many thanks - I'll keep you posted.
I agree with above that I think James Lake one of the younger sons, married Eliza Emmerson, in Victoria, Australia.

That makes more sense Mary as the John Lake marriage to Elizabet Pook took place in Devon and all their children were subsequently born in that area:

If he died in 1850, that would explain why he seems to disappear off the census records.

Maybe. It's really hard to know for sure isn't it. I am a descendant of Hannah Lake (daughter of John Lake and Elizabeth Pook) and the family legend has that she and her husband followed one of her siblings to Australia. I can find her younger brother James Lake in Australia so maybe it is him and Samuel died young??? Hannah Lake & her husband Isaac Burgess named their first born son Samuel, who was born in 1861. I think Hannah and Isaac left for Australia in 1862. Thanks again for thinking on it Maddie

Seems like a definite possibility. Might have to order some certificates to find out. Can anyone see him in an 1851 or 1861 census? I wonder if he had any kids?
