Hello all,

researching a friends family tree - I've come across a Lily Adams marrying a Harold L Bowen in 1943 registered in Bridgend.

Now trying to find any more info about these people, maybe in the 1939 register?
I am wondering if Harold L Bowen will be easier due to the middle initial.

Any help would be appreciated :-D

There's quite a few Harold Bowen on the 1939 reg. do you know his birth date

Do you know what the L stands for in his Christian name

Marrying in 1943 it may be he was in the forces and married in the brides home town

Have you found Lily Adams birth date ? Theres quite a few with the same name

As you are looking for a friends tree what other info do you have

I haven't got any info on Lily or Harold.

I just know they were based in Wales and had a daughter in 1948 called Linda.

I may be able to find out birth dates maybe soon but my friend is unavailable to get hold of at the moment.

I was hoping the L for Harold may help :-)

It doesn't help I,m afraid as the L could be any L Christian name

There is another thing to consider.

If they were born after 1916 and died after 1992, their records may still be closed. FMP are trying to match English/Welsh death indices 1992-2006 with the 1939 register but haven't yet completed the task.

I have found out that Lily's date of birth is 13 Oct 1920
and Harold's birth date is 4 January but i am unsure of the year.

Will this help finding them on the 1939?

the information given on a death certificate is only what the informant knows .......... many people lied about their ages

Thus the birth year on a death certificate may not be the real one.

Most people did seem to keep to the correct day and month ........


but not my Grandfather :-)

He added a year or two when he got married, made himself 19 instead of 17. Grandmother made herself 20 instead of 19 ............. why????????

He convinced all his family that he was born on December 25, we were allowed to think the year was 1884 or possibly 1883.

He lied on the 1939 Register

His birth year is wrong on his death certificate, information given by his only surviving child ................ who later found grandfather's birth certificate in a drawer.

His actual birth was on January 9 1885

I can't even be sure that he gave his right birth date on enlistment in WW1, although that might have been why he had his birth certificate hidden away.

In his case, I think it is possible that his parents might have told him he was born on Christmas Day wo they didn't have to buy 2 sets of presents (if they even got presents!).


Other people lied from vanity, because they were much older or younger than a spouse, or just let people guess!


Hence, I'm not surprised that you cannot find a death based on the known birth year :-)

married Lily Adams in 1943 Wales
died May 1988 Luton, Bedfordshire.

And Lily Adams born 13 Oct 1920 Wales
married Harold Leonard Bowen in 1943
died 2014 Luton.

hopefully not this time now we have found a death,

crucial info could be in the 1939 for these as individuals.

Unfortunately -

Lily was born after 1916 and didn't die until 2014, so her 1939 record won't be open.

Harold would have been 22 and could well have been in the Forces and if so, would not have appeared on the 1939 register.

So not seeing the parents marriage maybe the mum had been married before

Harold still doesn't show on the 1939 register

Shirley, Harold is with Bertha on the 1939 Register showing Harold's date of birth as 6th January 1916. Original actually says 4th January (a year out if born in 1917) - posted at 23.23 yesterday.

I too couldn't find a marriage Bowen to Smart.
