Completely agree, SylvanianCanada............. people seemed to make it up as they went along. Middle names as forenames, names being misheard (Emma became Helena in one census return). Makes it all the more exciting!

Looks like Ernest's father was living next door. Ernest and Violet were not listed at this address in 1930.

the name of the informant has to be on the death certificate.

I'm not surprised that her name might be wrong ..............

the only information that one can trust to be correct on a death certificate are:-

date of death
place of death
cause of death
date of registration
name and address of informant
name and address of doctor

ALL other information is only what is known to the informant ................. and our ancestors gave wrong information, accidentally or deliberately, even to their spouses.

We can all tell you tales of spouses who told porkies about their age, usually because they were much older or younger than their spouses. They changed their name(s) because they didn't like the one(s) they were given.

Both my maternal grandparents gave the wrong ages on their marriage certificates ......... they both added about 2 years to their real ages, but that still made them both under 21. Not only that, but grandfather maintained to all his children and grandchildren that his birthday was December 25, and if he said a year, it was 1884 or 1885.

Nope ........... he was born January 9 1885. He was baptised 29 December 1886, with his younger sister, so maybe his parents told him he was born on December 25. Who knows!!!

But not even his son who registered his death knew about the wrong birth date and year until he found a birth certificate pushed to the back of a drawer.


You should buy that death certificate to find out what is actually written on there ......... but the informant will probably be someone to do with the nursing home.

Malyon, Violet's history is unknown and sketchy. Having spoke to my mother about it, she thought the whole Hall/Hale thing was a typo and was quite surprised when I found it was genuine.

I'm not sure who would have registered her death - but they obviously weren't 100% sure about her name (both forename and surname).

Hi Malyon - OK, she is registered as Viola..... Try that, she's there. My family requested a copy of her birth certificate and it couldn't be found. Hence, no true DOB is known - all we know is that SHE thought she was over 100 and she also said her name was Viola (although all other papers say Violet). When she died, I guess the people registering her death called her Viola.

Lisa, you say your Violet died in 2000? Are you certain of that because it pretty much makes any birth before 1900 very unlikely?

Lisa, if I were you ( and you can afford to do so of course) I'd buy both marriage certs for father's details, I think that may be the only way to unravel it. :-)

I have just found another Violet in the 1911 census!!! Born 1897 in Brixton. SO could be her. BUT in the 1901 census, she isn't mentioned, but an Alice is. According to the 1911 doc, her parents have 8 living children but only 7 listed, so Alice could be elsewhere (but I can't find her).

Also, can't locate THIS Violet in births.
