well hm
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
shows no marriage for Robert W Ingleby
and no birth for Robert Willis Ingleby.
Nor is there a birth for Dorothy Evelyn Ingleby.
She may have told a porky!
how do you have her birth date? since there is no birth record to match.
Ah, her death record.

Do you have any info about Robert Willis Ingleby?
I can't see Dorothy or Robert in the 1911 census.
Can you say how you know where she was born - is that info on the death certificate for instance? if so it might not be accurate.

Births Dec 1881 ?? Ingleby Robert William Pateley Bridge 9a 60
Deaths Mar 1956 ? Ingleby Robert W 74 York 2d 959
That must be him ... maybe mistranscribed in 1911 ...
but still no marriage.
It may be that he was her father but her parents weren't married, but she took his surname ... or he was a stepfather whose surname she adopted ... or Ingleby was her mother's surname and Robert Willis Ingleby was fabricated from her father's name and her mother's surname ... all those things happened

that death date means he should be in the 1939 register
editing - found that Robert, sadly
The Retreat Registered Mental Hospital , York C.B., Yorkshire (West Riding), England Robert W Ingleby Patient 09 Oct 1881 Incapacitated Single
if that was her father, the circumstances might have been that in 1911 she was placed in foster care or informally adopted (there was no formal adoption until 1929) but is recorded under her foster/adoptive parent's surname

here is the closest I'm getting in 1911
Name: Robt Hy Ingleby Age in 1911: 32 Estimated birth year: abt 1879 Relation to Head: Head Gender: Male > Birth Place: Rawdon, Yorkshire, England > Civil Parish: North Manchester County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: 43 Patey St Longsight Manchester Marital Status: Married Occupation: Professiowal Cricketon ... professional cricketer Registration district: Prestwich Robt Hy Ingleby 32 Emily Ingleby 34 Doris Ingleby 5 born Keighley, Yorkshire Kolawole Ingleby 7/12 ... Florence Ingleby, sigh
Births Dec 1905 Ingleby Doris Keighley 9a 169
could your Dorothy have minimized her age because she was older than her groom? and fancified her name as young women not uncommonly did in the early 1920s?
but that's a very long shot
What was Robert Ingleby's occupation on Dorothy's marriage certificate? he wasn't recorded as deceased?
On the other hand, Dorothy may have been under 18 and exaggerated her age in order to marry.
Who were the witnesses to the marriage?
how about ...
Births Mar 1906 Ingleby Evelyn Pateley B. 9a 57
... no, she died unmarried in 1969
:-S

I think that maybe eliminates that one the Gins as the marriage certificate gives Robert, a Publican deceased. Of course it is always possible that Dorothy said her father was deceased as she was under 21 when she married.

My money is on the one JoonieC mentioned above - Robert Henry Ingleby on the 1911 census.
I know the middle name doesn't fit BUT I have followed him back and his father and brother were both called Charles WILLIS Ingleby .......

He seems to fit very well with with Joonies info and Gins' details above.
Perhaps he adopted the family middle name of Willis in later life and dropped the 'Henry' ?

Dorothy's DOB on death was 20 May 1909 on her death and 20 May 1908 on the 1939 register. Would that fit (assuming 20 May was correct regardless of year) with Doris's birth registration?
Doris Ingleby Registration Year: 1905 Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec Registration district: Keighley Parishes for this Registration District: View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding Volume: 9a Page: 169
Only just within the 6 weeks by a couple of days.

6 weeks would be 1st July at the latest wouldn't it ? - which would easily fall into the July-Aug-Sept. quarter.
EDIT - as in - it shouldn't be in the Oct/Nov/Dec Qtr

Yes Greyghost but the birth was register Oct-Nov-Dec quarter.
When Robert Henry married Emily, he gave his occupation as Professional Cricketer and his father's as a House Painter. On the 1901 census Robert Henry's occupation was Stone Mason. He may have become a Publican sometime after 1911 and before 1927 when "Dorothy Evelyn " married. Also she claims her father is deceased in 1927.
I'm not yet convinced that Doris and Dorothy Evelyn are one and the same.

Sorry Gins, I hadn't refreshed the page. My gut feeling given that the date and month of her birth are the same on her death registration and the 1939 register that that is correct, it's only the year that varies.

RG, no need for an apology :-)
I don't understand. If she was born in May (whatever year) she wouldn't have been registered from Oct - December
I am asking in case I've missed something :-S
