Find Ancestors

Many thanks to Sylvia for following up with so much detail about the family members I theorized. I'd done so much census searching to come up with them and try to trace them forward that I had worn myself out. ;)

Paula I can't find the Emma in Sheffield in 1901, can you post the details to include place of birth and whose aunt she is?

I would guess it wasn't the 'reformatory' part of it she was in, and rather that she was placed in care and then at that institution to learn an occupation.

can you say why you think that is Emma Hinton Cutts?

Ancestry is refusing to load the image for me so I can't see what she reports as marital status and whether the birthplace transcribed is accurate, etc

I would imagine this is the couple that Emma is living with

She's single, born in Sheffield.

I do NOT think that she is Emma Hinton Cutts

Nor is the other Emma Cutts born in Sheffield ...... who was the daughter of Martha or Mary Cutts

I would theorize that Emma was Arthur Sanderson's Aunt, as the relationship is to the Head of the household ................. but I doubt it is worth tracing back to find out exactly the relationship

I was trying to trace Emma Lee / Hinton / Cutts in the 1901 and 1911 census and that is how I found the information as Aunt living with Sandersons but I knew I would have to investigate further to check it out and you very kindly beat me to it, I didn't follow it up last night as it was very late.

I will be visiting my dad on Monday and I will ask again to see if he knows any history on his grandmother.

Sylvia .............. I guess I had the tab open and didn't refresh it ............... you posted the census etc. but I had not seen it ................ I was asking Paula why she thought that Emma was Emma HInton Cutts (Lee if such she was) since that was the last post I had actually seen when I started to compose my post (and got sidetracked and then came back to it)


anything your father can tell about Emma would be worth knowing Paula - even if it is complete fiction passed down through the family it is worth knowing what that fiction is, because sometimes there are little grains of truth in it!

I have now received the birth certificate for Florence Emma Lee younger sister Jessie Lee, born 26 February 1897 at 100 Belvedere Rd, Lambeth, mother Emma Lee (formally Hinton), father Henry Lee - soap packer. I understand Jessie has an adopted daughter called Gloria and they lived in Redruth, Cornwall as my cousin visited and I have a photo written on the back by an aunt approx early 60's. Any help tracing her descendants would be appreciated as it my help with details on great grandmother.

I don't see a Jessie with that birthdate in either the 1939 register or the deaths index who matches your Jessie

(have ruled out the deaths by finding the marriages that account for the surnames ... unless Jessie had married twice by 1939 ...)

unless you know Jessie's married surname (the name her adopted daughter married under, assuming she married), finding her will be pretty much impossible

I thought I would update you. I found some decendants from one of the Cutts children and we've have had the DNA done and it is an extremely hight match. That answers one question but we now cannot find her in the 1901 and 1911 census.
