A tree on Ancestry has the wife as Catherine Elizabeth Kelly, b.Lunenberg Nova Scotia
Confirmed by ALL the birth registrations.
He probably married her in CANADA. Or didn’t marry at all

John I won't go back through all the posts, but since you last queried the GRO has given mother's maiden names on births, which might be of some help. Looking at the 1881 census that has been posted, you can check the births of children

John, you say,"I have james and catherines marr at Winchester 1850."
Where have you found that, please? None of us can find any such marriage.
In your opening post you said he had married Catherine Martin - but that has been disproved - and that marriage was in London in any case, not Winchester.
Christina asked about James's sibling (brother or sister), but you have listed his children. As she said, if we knew the name of his brother or sister, we might be able to trace the family that way.

chris I don't understand about childrens entries having Kelly. I have james and catherines marr at Winchester 1850 and that's where his first child ann was born 1852, it is said in his service record that the regiment came back to southhampton1851 most of the men went to Winchester so from then till they sailed for the crimea in 1854. maybe the dates were wrong it happens anyway. I have been trying to find out about james/Catherine for a few years now but you dug up Ireland which I can add to my list I thank you chris john

Well John, as good as GR helpers are, I'm afraid we cannot tell you what Certificates say!...(and, they would give you the Mothers Maiden name)
All childrens entries on Ancestry, have Kelly (I thought you had established that it wasn't the Martin one, her being the one with other James, bricklayer)
No Marriage has been found for your James and Catherine, as said, it could be anywhere, he was away as you know, with Regiment.
That is where your problem lies...
Chris :)

England, Andrews Newspaper Index Cards, 1790-1976
This unique card index was compiled in England from the 1790s until about 1970 and features a collection of notices from newspapers and various official sources, such as the London Gazette. Approximately 250,000 cards include announcements of births, marriages, obituaries, and deaths abroad; notices of wills, unclaimed estates, and filings under the Colonial Probates Act of 1892 (which recognized probates from courts in British possessions); and advertisements for missing persons and people seeking next of kin. The original newspaper clippings on the cards sometimes include annotations referring to additional information from other sources.
