Interestingly, that 1841 census that has the unnamed child on it .................
the census image shows it as a male child BUT then Rhoda is the only child born in 1841 :-S
so I think that the child's age was put in the wrong column, the male column instead of the female one

in the 1851 Census, Frances E Hanna is shown as born in India, so this must be her in later censuses, but without any of the children
1861 Census
Name: Frances Hanna Age: 40 Estimated birth year: 1821 Relation: Head Gender: Female Where born: East Indies Civil Parish: Stoke Town: Guildford County/Island: Surrey
1871 Census
Name: Frances Hanna Age: 51 Estimated birth year: abt 1820 Relation: Head Gender: Female Where born: East Indies Civil Parish: Stoke next Guildford Town: Guildford County/Island: Surrey Country: England Registration district: Guildford
so were the children all left to go their own ways???
and if so, where are they ......... Rhoda appears in 1861, then not again until 1891. Edith doesn't appear until 1891, etc etc

Gosh, you've all been so busy - when do you sleep!
Julian's career in the Merchant Navy is interesting, but in view of his below post I don't think the book can be referring to this brother of HBH: bother, this site won't let me cut and paste so here is the link to the book and page number: "British Administration in Kumaon Himalayas", pages 134-135. A "Mr. Hanna" is credited with the notion of constructing a wire ropeway between Kathgodam and Nainital [HBH, who may or may not be his brother, was married in Nainital two years later in 1889]. Everything looks to be a lovely coincidence of names and places and years, but I can't pinpoint which of HBH's brothers the above may be. Can you see any of the other brothers in adulthood with an occupation which may 'fit', please? :-)

Nicola, surely (unless I have completely failed to grasp the thread on a quick read) it would have been Stewart, who was an engineer and was granted a patent in 1871 (good finds Chris Ho)
I had mainly wanted to mention that the ages of the Frances and children in the 1851 census had caught my eye immediately and certainly suggested a second marriage ... disparity between ages of husband and wife, and the young age of that Frances made her unlikely to be the mother of at least the eldest children
so the death of Frances C in 1850 and marriage to Frances E in 1851 would be correct

JoonieCloonie and ChrisHo - again, you are officially wizards at this game. When I made my last post, I was just in the throes of going to collect my car which had been very poorly for the last week - even though it was new! I hadn't looked properly at ChrisHo's amazing find - apologies.
Of course, it is indeed my HBH's brother Stewart George and with that wonderfully helpful description of his Raj career. Whoopee.
I wonder if he married/had offspring?? If he had children, it would be a wonderful end to this story if I could offer them a copy of the handwritten journal by my GGA where she mentions him several times .............. Can you see a marriage for him, please?
BTW, I see that HBH's baptism record on ancestry in 1851 has the incorrect middle name of 'Bethina'. In the past, I've made corrections on Ancestry but can no longer find the button; have they removed it, or am I being dumb. :-S

Here is an excerpt from the handwritten journal that I am transcribing, where my GGGA mentions 'Mr. Hanna'; the journal begins on September 27 1889. It is absolutely fascinating and luckily she goes into tremendous detail about her surroundings and the marches that they make to various places [although when she writes 'march', it actually means that she and her sister Rosamond [R below] are carried by the kulis in dhandis!! The kulis do all the hard work. "Tuesday Novr 5. 1889 Went out early, up the hill, & along it, passing Page 48. behind Mr. Hanna’s[71a], by the tennis ground of the old Government House[72], & so down past the Post Office. R had never been along these paths before & was charmed with them." Etc.,etc. The numbered footnotes are my research as I go along with the transcription. :-)

the link for correcting is over on the left of the individual record, and says
'Add alternate information'
on the pop-up form, as you fill in each item, you get the next item to fill in (reason for correction, what you're correcting, explanation, etc - be sure to state that you're related, I hate coming across corrections and not knowing whether the person is a family member!)

somebody needed an abacus :-)
if he had been married, one would think it would have named his wife, but perhaps not necessarily if she was not part of London society?

there was another one ..............because I found a Stewart George Hanna living in Queensland .............. posting below at 13 Dec 2015 01:48 and copied over to here:-
------- from FMP
Hanna Stewart G — — 1885 Queensland directories Queensland, Australia
Hanna Stewart George — — 1903 Queensland electoral rolls Queensland, Australia
Hanna Stewart George — — 1906 Queensland electoral rolls Queensland, Australia
Hanna Stewart George — — — Cyclopedia of New Zealand v2 Auckland New Zealand
Unfortunately, the images for the above don't seem to show Stewart George Hanna ?????
---------
could this one be a descendant
OR just a member of the Hanna family from Ireland (where Stewart William and his first wife were born). My researching last night did seem to show a usage of the same or very similar names.

Thank you JoonieCloonie for the guidance about amending Ancestry's transcriptions - have updated for HBH.
Seems that his brother Stewart probably didn't marry/have children so we the descendants will be the ones to have the pleasure of all this wonderful writing. :-D
