Sheffield Daily Telegraph - Friday 10 December 1875

THE SWAITHE MAIN EXPLOSION

"...Thomas Smith said 'I live at Bacup, I am a moulder. I identify my brother, Richard Smith, 29 years of age. He was driving a drift. I last saw him alive about six months ago. His body was rescued yesterday morning. He lived in the Chapel- Yard, Worsborough Dale. He was in a club. He is married and has three children..."

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Jun 2016 05:51

it's his father's occupation that might help in identifying the family in 1851 or 1861

Moira

Moira Report 5 Jun 2016 05:39

I cannot read the occupation on the marriage cert for the father. On the Coroners report for Richard, the person who identified the body states, "I am Thomas Smith from Bacup and I am his brother, I saw the bodypf Richard Smith at 1 oclock yesterday at Swaithe pit, he was 29 years old."

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Jun 2016 22:30

what was his father's occupation on the marriage certificate??

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Jun 2016 22:18

Moira .................

the marriage certificate should give his age, not the year he was born ..........

If he was born in 1846, and married in 1864, he was only 18, and therefore under-age (21 being legal age). He would thus have required parental permission to get married.

Therefore he lied about his age ..... if he said that he was 22, that equates to a birth year of 1842.

Not at all unusual.

I should believe the death report!

Then ............... there is the question of whether father was actually still alive in 1851 or 1861, or whether he even existed.

Moira

Moira Report 4 Jun 2016 06:44

Thank you to all who helped me, I have now got the cert's
Richard William Married Mary Elizabeth Vickers in Hoyland Barnsley
Richards father was Richard Smith b, 1846 ? Kingswinford Staffordshire He married Emma Litchfield in 1864 Hoyland Barnsley this Richard Died in the swaithe mining disaster of 1875 and his age was put at 29 this would him being born 1846 but on his marriage cert to Emma he is down as being born 1842, his father is named on the marriage cert. as Thomas, I cannot find the family of this on either the 1851 or the 1861 census

Looking at the 1911 census posted on the other Thread, I'm wondering whether the William Smith listed is in fact Richard William. Although it says his occupation is Organ Grinder on earlier censuses his Occupation is a Miner

I keep going back to the Marriage of Richard William Smith in 1885 who it looks like married Mary Elizabeth Vickers

There is this 1901 census that could be Lily.

This looks to be the Marriage of Thomas & Myria

So could Myra/Myria be the sister of Susannah and possibly Mary Elizabeth ?
Making Myra/Myria & Susannah Aunts to Lily?

The following Thread looks to be related

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/ancestors/thread/1278560

It looks like Lily was co-habiting with Charles Mapplebeck, 18 years her senior, in 1911

There is an entry in 1939 in Hoyland Nether, Yorkshire West Riding

Charles Mapplebeck b 1870
Lily Mapplebeck b 1888

One more person on record + two locked.

Moira ...........

that is what alviegal and I suggested was the case when we identified who they were.

"Professional" witnesses were a way of life for many of our ancestors ............ if their friends could not get time off work to go to a wedding, then the church usually had a couple of people around who would act as witnesses for a small fee. These people were staunch churchgoers, often the warden, sexton or sidesmen, but able to be around during the daytime.
