I think this might be relevant, for Bedford Chapman
1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription Mansfield Street, St Margaret, Leicester, Leicestershire, England John Smart Male 35 1806 - T Mary Smart Female 35 1806 - Marriott Smart Male 15 1826 - Bedford Smart Male 3 1838 - Mary Chapman Female 20 1821 - Edward Chapman Male 1 1840 Leicestershire, England Patrick Turner Male 35 1806 - Stephen Dexter Male 22 1819 - John Hill Male 7 1834 Leicestershire, England
Note there is no birth for a Bedford Smart so I am reasonably sure this is Bedford Chapman with his mother and another child
(going back to above post, think perhaps below is them)

If this is the baptism for Edward:
Name: Edward Smith Gender: Male Baptism Date: 8 Oct 1811 Baptism Place: New Sleaford,Lincoln,England Father: John Smith Mother: Elizabeth FHL Film Number: 504758
then someone on Ancestry has several siblings for him- including a RICHARD LONGMALE SMITH born in 1797.
So, perhaps the Longmate name came from Edward's side of the family, and not Marys.

After these posts I am now thinking the Longmate or Longmead does come from the Smith side and the Romany element always assumed it was the Mary Clewing side

Well spotted AustinQ, I don't know how I missed seeing Bedford's mother there :-( but it does tie in nicely with the address on the 1851 as posted, being Belgrave gate Barbers Yard, 6, Belgrave Gate, St Margaret, Leicester, Leicestershire, England

The addresses for the Smiths and extended families do seem to consist of yards does that mean they are possibly living in caravans?
