I know I am probably repeating what has been posted, BUT, this is the 1881 census

Name Age
John Thomas 80
Elizabeth Thomas 50
Margaret Thomas 22
Anne Thomas 16
Elizabeth Thomas 14
Catherine Thomas 9
John Huxtable 2
William H. Huxtable
Jane Smith 64

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 9 Sep 2015 21:42

The two Huxtable children are listed as grandchildren, presumably to John Thomas.

Is it right to assume Margaret is their mother, or could they be the offspring of another daughter of Thomas, possibly even a married one?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 9 Sep 2015 21:59

this is where I'm having the problem

If she was Thomas, why are the children Huxtable?

Was she married before?

If not, then the father has to have agreed for his name to be used, which means his name SHOULD be on the birth certificate because he would have had to be present at the registration ......... at least, that is my understanding.

I think friendlywelshdragon needs to tell us exactly what is on Alfred John Huxtable/Thomas birth certificate regarding Margaret's name(s). Did she masquerade as a Huxtable when registering the birth?

This appears to be the baptism referred to:

Glamorgan Baptisms
First name(s) ALFRED JOHN
Last name THOMAS
Birth year 1879
Baptism year 1879
Baptism day 22
Baptism month May
Baptism place NOLTON
Father's first name(s) -
Mother's first name(s) Margaret
County Glamorganshire

She's described as a single woman of Port Talbot

friendlywelshdragon Report 9 Sep 2015 23:22

will try to work out how to post copies of the certificates
When and Where born: Fourth February 1879 Cowbridge Name: Alfred John Sex: boy Father John Huxtable Mother Margaret Thomas a Domestic servant
Occupation of Father: Gardener Discription of Informant John Huxtable Father Cowbridge M. Thomas Mother Aber House Port Talbot when registered 18th March 1879 registrar William John

When and where born: Tenth March 1881 Oldcastle Bridgend USD Name: William
Name of Father _________ Name of Mother Margaret Thomas General Servant
occupation of Father ____________ Informant Magaret Thomas Mother Oldcastle Bridgend Registered Twenty sixth April 1881Registrar Thomas Jenkins

According to John Thomas although his name was Huxtable on the birth certificate his true father was one of the Thomas family from Sutton farm / Manor
and Huxtable was a gardener who was paid to give his name . but there is no way to prove that . I have put this on another thread two years ago http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/ancestors/thread/1314522?page=0

I did eventually trace my great grandfathers wedding in East Stonehouse Devon .His parents wedding is on this thread ,and I have been trying to trace the wedding of his mother's parents as I am sure I have the right census records for them as a married couple .

I have found a wedding in Parish Records.for 1844 in Michaelstone Glamorgan
John Thomas Carpenter Residence: Hendon. Father's name John Thomas Labourer
Elizabeth Thomas Residence : Hafod Park Glamorgan Father's name :David Thomas Farmer

How can I prove if these are the parents ?
Havod Park is in Swansea where Elizabeth was from but could that just be coincidence

Here's the image for that 1855 marriage, I'm a bit suspicious of the occupation for John Thomas .....

Could you please confirm what the basis is for your information that John's wife's maiden name was also Thomas?

Hi Marie . I'm suspicious of that wedding too now This is the couple I am looking for . I'm not positive about the brides surname but it keeps coming up with Thomas on all the searches also the person in Bridgend history said there was a wedding in Swansea which he found a record for

friendlywelshdragon Report 13 Sep 2015 10:41

Hi Chris That has surprised me . It's definitely the right address . John did own Number 6 Greenfield Terrace (now Greenfield Street ,as houses were built on the opposite side ) His granddaughter now in her 80's still lives there. John's wife passed away on 1921 with parturition 1month and cerebral Embolism Which I understand is connected to Childbirth . The family is on the 1911 Census but there were two later children Walter (possibly 1913 ) and Anne who I thought was 1916. But she lived into her 80's The baby was Elizabeth . :-S
Not sure what 1 month means on the death certificate . Does it mean a month after the birth . If so . it seems that baby Elizabeth passed away in 1916 and Anne was born in1921 and survived .I know my late grandmother ( Anne's sister Martha on the1911 census ) said Anne was a baby and she had to bring her up .

I know that's the couple you're looking for but it still doesn't explain where you got Elizabeth's maiden name from.

If you look on link posted, Date of Death 9/1/1916...

Then you need to check for Birth and Death on below, you know the area to look for more than me!.

(sorry MC, I'm butting in your conversation, confusion reigns enough!, lol)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Sep 2015 19:31

The death took place on 9 Jan 1916, Elizabeth was aged 3 weeks

and therefore was born about 3 weeks earlier, or around the 18th December 1915, give or take a couple of days.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Sep 2015 19:46

Bridgend appears to be the registration District that includes Maesteg ...................

there are 2 deaths in March quarter of an Elizabeth Thomas age 0 (ie, under 1 year), this therefore seems the most likely ...............

Deaths Mar 1916 (>99%)

Thomas Elizabeth A 0 Bridgend 11a 926

Then comes confusion

There are no births of an Elizabeth A registered in Dec 1915 on freembd ..... not surprising as the birth was late in the onth.

There are two Elizabeth A Thomas registered in March quarter 1916 ................

Births Mar 1916 (>99%)

Thomas Elizabeth A Richards Bridgend 11a 1618
Thomas Elizabeth A Thomas Merthyr T. 11a 1486

The first is registered in the correct area, but the mother's maiden name is shown as Richards

The second has mother's maiden name Thomas but is registered in a different area.

You might have to buy BOTH those birth certificates to see which is which, or even, if either belongs to your family.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Sep 2015 20:03

you say there was a Walter born possibly 1913 and Anne in 1921

I found these births on freebmd

Births Sep 1913 (>99%)
THOMAS Walter Richards Bridgend 11a 1889

NO Walter with mother maiden name Thomas born 1912-1914

Two births for an Ann* born in 1921 with mmn Thomas, not one with mmn Richards

Births Sep 1921 (>99%)

Thomas Ann Thomas Neath 11a 2157
Thomas Annie Thomas Bridgen 11a 1979

There is a Meurig A Thomas with mmn Richards. Is Meurig a male or female name?

Births Sep 1921 (>99%)

THOMAS Meurig A Richards Swansea 11a 2306

When exactly did John's wife die from parturition fever, which is indeed due to childbirth, and which she had apparently suffered from for 1 month?

The month in which she died will indicate the month that month that she had her last child ................ parturition fever usually develops within a few days of birth.

A cerebral embolism is not necessarily connected with childbirth, although it might be ............... it just means a clot of blood has reached the brain and blocked blood flow. My mother died of a Cerebral embolism, but at the age of 58

Hi Sylvia . Elizabeth's maiden name was Richards but she married John Thomas in 1898 they had 7 children before the loss of the baby Elizabeth . and one after that in1921. No family connections with Merthyr as far as I know . :-S
