Find Ancestors

Just discoverd I'm related to a 19th Century 'Tragedian and Stage Manager', Mun Nobel Paumier, who acted with Ellen Tree. There is a following bio I got from google, but wondering if we could:

a) find a picture of him and his wife
b) any more specific information on the CAREER his wife as she is my blood relative

(I have info on her family and not really looking into Mun's family):

He was bom in Whitehaven about the year 1805. He came of a wealthy
North of England family, and leaving college at an early
age became stage-struck on seeing Macready perform in the
Liverpool theatre. After this engagement at Cork, Paumier
went to London and offered Manager Alfred Bunn of Drury
Lane £150 to be allowed to appear as Hamlet at his theatre.
This he eventually did, with fair success, on May l7th, 1836.
His friends journeyed by coach from Whitehaven and hissed
him on his first entrance on the stage, that being their way of
trying to make him abandon the profession, but he had the
sense not to mind them. From this he rapidly came to the
front and gamed a popular verdict for his representation of
some Shakespearean parts. He frequently toured the pro-
vinces with Miss Helen Faucit. He was of prepossessing
appearance, and although six feet two inches in height,
he carried himself very gracefully. After spending a large
fortune in the management of the Whitehaven, Newport, and
Carlisle theatres, he retired fi'om the stage. His last per-
formance was Shylock at the Whitehaven theatre (under
Fletcher's lesseeship) in the autumn of 1875. He died
in the year following and was buried at Egremont
Cemetery.

There is quite a lot on him in the newspapers of the time.

In fact I've had quite a chuckle reading about him. He doesn't seem to take criticism very well and positively does not like being laughed at!



One example in Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser 14 June 1876 he was playing Macbeth with Miss Cushman and was described as an 'intelligent and gentlemanly man'.

He was also very tall but very thin and some of the audience made fun of his legs. They also ridiculed 'the too pronounced movement of the facial muscles to which Mr Paumier was addicted.'

Being very sensitive and suffering from depression arising from having consumption he had not the energy to argue and instead 'threw up his engagement' at the theatre.

In previous years he would have have had something to say to the hecklers and, in fact, had been in court for spitting in the faces of 3 hecklers who turned out to be 'officers and gentlemen.'



From West Kent Guardian 28 May 1836

His debut in Hamlet at Drury Lane and then Richard III a few nights later was a failure and reportedly cost him 400 guineas. The writer then suggests that he may console himself with the fact that even though he may not tread the royal boards again, many needy managers would 'grasp at a much less sum in order that he may gratify his favourite passion.'

Ouch!!

This seems to contradict somewhat what you have posted above Peter.

In fact in Morning Post 07 March 1843 he also has a stinking review at Covent Garden which basically says that the audience 'tittered' which saved him from an 'explosion of hisses.'

This is amazing. Wow, what a character. Thank you. Now, I had seen some bad reviews for the poor chap but none like this ... what a gem! Seems as though he was a performer, but more suited to comedy than perhaps serious roles?

Indeed, yes, correct his wife was Mary Sherwen.

It shows just how varied historical sources can be - if you can find any more then please let know and post here.

PS we're probably a bit too early for a photograph in a newspaper, aren't we?

Also, I recall him dying in the late 1870s so he was at least working until the end. He must have had some skill or surely he wouldn't have kept working?

With that, Mary's mother, Jane is my distant aunt and her sister Margaret had a grandson who was a theatre manager. His son also acted and took the name PAUMIER in the early 1900s/1910s. So seems he had quite an effect on later generations.

If Mun-Noble had not take himself so seriously, he might have been the original John Cleese!


He probably had "cartes de visite" with his photograph on if he was still promoting himself as an actor in the 1870s ... but for one to have survived would be miraculous perhaps. Since he was well to do it is quite likely he would have had a painted portrait or two of himself in costume.

As they had no children if I am understanding correctly, you could only hope to trace descendants of a niece or nephew in the hope they had been given things left by him.

It could be worth trying to contact the people in the Ancestry thread, they seem to be related as 3 of them seem to be in Canada but they would be indirectly related to Mr Paumier through a mutual ancestor.

Ah this is why I love this website - always good to work as a team and have a second (or several) pairs of eyes on the subject.

I even found a reference yesterday to Paumier performing in Merlbourne and a huge fracas in 1843 in Whitehaven where the actors refused to go on stage for Mary Paumier's (my blood relative) benefit performance. Fascinating.

Thank you ArgyllGran for the 1841 as I had not seen this and struggled looking for it. Also, I'm not sure if the Sherwin family are mine but something to look into. Also thank you JoonieCloonie - I too was hoping for a carte de visite, but hey ho, we shall see. For an actor with such poor reviews, his work seems to be prolific. Performing at Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield to name a few, not to mention his London performances. I'll contact those Canadian contacts and go from there :)
