Hi all - yeah - wow, thank you for the dlinks to the scanned dcuments. That reminds me actually, I wonder if there was an actor's directory that might hold photos?

Haha the Compton's sound a right old bunch but I'll save then for another time as they aren't really my line at all, and the second Paumier actor is a rather distant link but thank you for sharing what you have done. Really adds more to the story!

Also thank you for the census returns you included as they show my distant Margaret POOLE SMITH, which links all of this otgehter.

Interestingly, I too found the two marriages of Alfred Richard Hodgson and Diana, but Diana's father's occupation changes within those months rather strangely.

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jan 2015 02:17

from your link, this is the son of Alfred Hodgson/Paumier the actor born 1870? --

'Ronald Harker Joseph Alfred Richard Hodgson-Paumier died, probably of shell fire, on August 16th 1917, he was 21 years old, his war lasted a mere 68 days.'

unfortunately, and it seems rather odd, his next of kin do not show on the CWGC record

http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/103524/HODGSON-PAUMIER,%20R%20H%20J%20A%20R

there is a reference to his death here too

http://archive.org/stream/stageyearbook1918londuoft/stageyearbook1918londuoft_djvu.txt

Paumier, Ronald Hodgson. August 22. Killed
in action in France, Son of Mr. Alfred Paumier.

in the same publication with references to two plays in which his father appeared

here is a gorgeous scan of the 1910 edition of the same publication (it's 450 pages!), with a reference to Alfred Paumier on page 95 ... as a touring manager ... and again on page 101 as a manager

http://scans.library.utoronto.ca/pdf/3/20/stageyearbook1910londuoft/stageyearbook1910londuoft.pdf

oh and I took a guess at changing the year in the URL

http://scans.library.utoronto.ca/pdf/3/20/stageyearbook1918londuoft/stageyearbook1918londuoft.pdf

and you can see the notice of Ronald's death there in the original at page 44

and at the very beginning is an advertisement for postcards with your photograph on them, every actor's necessity :-)

One really could spend a day looking up all the Paumiers

as for Alfred Hodgson Sr ... as a non-stage personality there are probably not the kind of traces to be found as there are of a tragedian or comedian ...

I'll see what I can do about saving that page and will PM it to you if it works

but really in your browser just do File - Save Page As in Firefox (or save as ... in IE) and pick where to save it and give it a name, and then you will be able to open it in your browser by File - Open and going to where you have saved it

You will have to save it that way when I send it to you anyway I think !

Haha what an interesting bunch - oh thank you for compiling this. Appreciated! Thank you. Wow, not sure where to start.

OK thank you for the link to the pics and so lovely to hear your photograph success story. Wonderful to hear.

I'm trying to save the letter, but wonder could you possible do it for me? I'm not sure if I've got it working correctly. Not an issue if not but worth an ask.

I'm flabbergasted. Also found this which shows the family of Alfred Paumier, the actor (1870-1951):

I'm just curious, can we find out more about Alfred Hodgson senior, the theatrical manager? I've very interested to hear more about him too. He just seems difficult to find.

in 1871 Alfred Sr was a commercial clerk

not managing to see Alfred Sr and Diana in 1881

in 1891 the couple is in St Pancras and he is a retired theatrical manager
(Ancestry transcribes her as Dinna)

her husband Percy Compton Mackenzie born 1855 died in the same place 1910 aged 55

but I can't see Diana in 1901 or 1911

oh here we are, it was a composite surname (actually just his stage name I think after googling more)
Diana in 1911

Name: Diana Peek Compton

someone has corrected the name at Ancestry, in 2012 ... you could try contacting there if you don't know that person ... active at Ancestry last week

in 1901 Diana P Compton is shown as wife but husband is not present ... I just wondered whether he was theatrical too

there he is in Warrington ... indeed, occupation actor :-)

and for a mere 799.00 USD you can buy a letter written by him!

PERCY COMPTON
The actor tries to arrange a get-together for tea.
Autograph Letter signed: "Percy Compton", 1 page, 5x8. Lion Hotel, Nottingham [England], 1891 April 18. On hotel letterhead to "Dear Webb", in full: "I was away when your note arrived or would have had great pleasure on taking tea on Friday, but had intended to do so today and made an appointment for yesterday. I regret exceedingly that I have not been able to bring my wife (who will not be with me till Monday) but look forward to the pleasure of seeing you on your return visit in the autumn. With kindest regards to Mrs. Webb. Yours sincerely". Actor Percy Compton was the younger brother of actors Edward and Katharine Compton, and the son of actors Henry and Emmeline (Montague) Compton. Two horizontal folds. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.

but what the heck you can save a watermarked digital image of that too

do it soon in case somebody snaps it up ! he he ... actually it seems not possible to save it directly

but if you save (not bookmark/favourites) the page it should save the image on it for you

google

and you'll find loads of stuff about him

oh my he is a fun one too ... I don't subscribe at fmp but I can see this here

you have simply months of entertainment laid out before you with this bunch !!

(the stage personality in my family was performing around 1870 as well but was younger than your Mun Noble ... and my amazing luck was to find a carte de visite on line, not available for sale but I got the digital image)

ah, I wondered whether there was a connection but that one was too obscure to have figured out in a month of Sundays :-)

"alfred paumier" actor

and you'll see the pics but these are direct links to buying the carte de visite

oh and google images found this one too

Peter Report 14 Jan 2015 00:35

With that, Alfred Hodson senior was ALSO an actor manager but I know nothing of him! Could we find out more?

Peter

Peter Report 14 Jan 2015 00:34

Haha yeah to list your occupation as 'tragedian' is wonderful.

On that note, Alfred Hodgson is ALSO a relative of mine! It is a little complex however, so bear with me:

Alfred Gardner Pickthall Hodgson (b 1870 stagename PAUMIER) son of:
Alfred Richard Hodsgon (1849-1896)
Mary Ann Smith (1807-1887)
Margaret Poole (1777-1867)
John Poole (1734-1807)

John Poole is my direct ancestor

Margaret Poole's sister is Jane Poole (1773-1828), and her daughter:
Mary Sherwin (1812-1892) is the wife of Mun Nobel Paumier (1812-1876). Margaret and Jane's brother Henry Poole (1767-1819) is my ancestor.

So the second actor, Alfred Hodgson Paumier is a lesser link but still one I'm interested in, so please do send the links. I only discovered this recently so no VERY little about the second actor.

And to top it off, I'm an actor too - finally, after 12 years of genealogy, I've finally found some theatricals!

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 13 Jan 2015 22:18

re alviegal's actor Alfred Paumier, I just saw that up above

I was actually going to post some links to a carte de visite for him available on line

but then I looked him up ... and he was born Alfred Hodgson! and Paumier was just his stage name :-(

he married in 1895 and is shown under both names

I wonder whether he chose it in honour !

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Jan 2015 20:23

Re the 1841 -
how wonderful to be able to list one's occupation as "tragedian"!

Peter

Peter Report 13 Jan 2015 13:05

Ah this is why I love this website - always good to work as a team and have a second (or several) pairs of eyes on the subject.

I even found a reference yesterday to Paumier performing in Merlbourne and a huge fracas in 1843 in Whitehaven where the actors refused to go on stage for Mary Paumier's (my blood relative) benefit performance. Fascinating.

Thank you ArgyllGran for the 1841 as I had not seen this and struggled looking for it. Also, I'm not sure if the Sherwin family are mine but something to look into. Also thank you JoonieCloonie - I too was hoping for a carte de visite, but hey ho, we shall see. For an actor with such poor reviews, his work seems to be prolific. Performing at Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield to name a few, not to mention his London performances. I'll contact those Canadian contacts and go from there :)

Thank you!

JoonieCloonie Report 13 Jan 2015 01:51

There is a discussion thread at Ancestry spanning a decade that could help sort out the tree branches

http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/localities.britisles.england.cul.general/521/mb.ashx

.......... or make a muddle of them :-)

If Mun-Noble had not take himself so seriously, he might have been the original John Cleese!

He probably had "cartes de visite" with his photograph on if he was still promoting himself as an actor in the 1870s ... but for one to have survived would be miraculous perhaps. Since he was well to do it is quite likely he would have had a painted portrait or two of himself in costume.

As they had no children if I am understanding correctly, you could only hope to trace descendants of a niece or nephew in the hope they had been given things left by him.

It could be worth trying to contact the people in the Ancestry thread, they seem to be related as 3 of them seem to be in Canada but they would be indirectly related to Mr Paumier through a mutual ancestor.
