It may be she married as Cough as she was hiding the fact she wasn't married but had children known as Clough Lots of cover ups occurred to cover tracks
Not seeing a death for Harry Clough either
In my own family one ladies birth was never reg in 1901 as her dad was an Army deserter and his wife would deny any knowledge of his whereabouts . A child coming along was a give away so she was never registered .caused all sorts of problems later on when she was eligible for OAP pension .
It does look your Gladys birth wasn't reg :-(

The report in the Lancashire Evening Post refers to her running to her stepmother Mrs Spriggs wife of Andrew Spriggs. Not sure how she is a stepmother (or indeed what the relationship with Andrew Spriggs is) but they were running the Clough Springs Hotel at the time - coincidence?

Yes Gins, had found that census. In another article in the Burnley Express Martha Ann is described as grandmother....still can't work out the relationship!
The rest of Florence's family are also in Burnley St Peter East Ward - district 13 rather than 20.
It's an interesting conspiracy......... :-)

There are so many instances of "Clough" in Florence's life that I am beginning to believe my own conspiracy theory. It would also explain why we can't find a marriage or a death for Harry :-)
I can't find a marriage for Martha Ann to John Riley so I think she must have just assumed his name.

Going back to that Harry Clough whom Gins found on page 1:
This will be him in 1901 with his parents:
1901 England Census about Harry Clough Name: Harry Clough Age: 12 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1889 Relation to Head: Son Gender: Male Father: Henry Clough Mother: Louisa Clough Birth Place: Oldham, Lancashire, England Civil Parish: Oldham Ecclesiastical parish: Oldham St Stephen and All Martyrs County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Registration district: Oldham Sub-registration district: Oldham Above Town ED, institution, or vessel: 03 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 3814 Folio: 58 Page Number: 24 Household schedule number: 170 Household Members: Name Age Henry Clough 49 Louisa Clough 48 Annie Clough 18 Mary A Clough 16 (actually Mary H) Harry Clough 12
By 1911 Louisa is widowed, as we saw on page 1. NOTE: HAROLD HOLT, GRANDSON - I expect it's too much to hope that's some link to Florence's future husband George's family?
1911 England Census about Harry Clough Name: Harry Clough Age in 1911: 22 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1889 Relation to Head: Son Gender: Male Birth Place: Om, Lancashire, England Civil Parish: Oldham County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: 14 Bridgewater St Oldham Marital Status: Single Occupation: Warehouseman Registration district: Oldham Registration District Number: 469 Sub-registration district: Oldham East ED, institution, or vessel: 1 Piece: 24439 Household Members: Name Age Louisa Clough 58 Annie Clough 28 Harry Clough 22 Harold Holt 4
Young Harold also appears on the census with his parents in 1911:

I did notice too that a later newspaper report said Martha Spriggs was Florence's grandmother but hadn't checked it out. I had also pondered the recurrence of "Clough" in the various addresses after I'd posted that baptism..

Yes I think so...Martha Ann Spriggs married him as Martha Ann Riley.
She was Sarah Jarvis's mother and Sarah was born before she "married" John Riley and so Sarah was registered as Sarah Riley Jarvis.
I can't find a death for John Riley - but it's a common name - and I can't find a marriage for Martha Ann and him. Andrew Spriggs appears to have married only once at the age of 50 (to Martha)
Of course whilst this puts some meat on the bones it doesn't answer the original question regarding the three girls born as Clough.
Karen, if the Dorothy M born 1922 is your "Dolly" then Elsie wasn't the youngest (or Dorothy the oldest). Do you know who Dorothy and Gladys married?
I have to agree with Shirley that neither Gladys or Elsie appear to have been registered...unless Florence moonlighted as "Catlow" - there are births that match the names and dates for both Elsie and Gladys......... :-S

Yes Martha was Florence's grandmother. I have her "in Memorium" card from when she was buried - all black embossed card. John Riley is interred with her at Burnley cemetery. I always wondered why Florence wasn't living at home with her parents for the 1901 census too. I was contacted by the granddaughter of Fred Constantine, who only knew of Florence's existence after finding her at home in the 1911 census. Fred never mentioned his oldest sister apparently.
Gladys married 12/09/36 to George Taylor. Gladys's daughter Elaine is still living and gave me Gladys' birthdate.
