I am trying to find information about Walter Knowles who emigrated to Canada in 1911, sailing from Liverpool to Halifax on the Megantic, a ship of the White Star-Dominion line. He was 22 years old and a compositor by trade.

This Walter Knowles (there are many of them) was born in Bolton, Lancashire, UK, in 1889, the son of Isaac Knowles and his wife Sarah nee Silk. I can find no suitable marriage or death for him in the UK.

Please can anyone help?

He was single when he went out to Canada so maybe he stayed there.

1911 census was taken 2 April. How could he have sailed to Canada 18 Feb.? Unless he stayed aboard and came right home?

And this guy was not a compositor, he was a spindle maker, iron works. (Actually it was transcribed as spinster maker which could be misconstrued)

The 1911 census you posted Margee has Isaac's wife as Martha A in 1901, so probably the wrong family.

The postings about Sarah Ann Martha Silk are correct. It is, therefore, the right family in 1911. I have the parents' history (both Knowles and Silk families) but have not been able to trace the three youngest sons for sure: Arthur, Albert and Walter Knowles. I have dates of possible marriages. Thanks for the info re. date of census. Walter obviously did not go to Canada. Thanks also for the British Army ref. with his father's name as next of kin.
