The unit's war diaries are online via: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/020152_e.html I've never heard of the 4th Tunnelling Coy - I think it must be a reserve coy which supplied replacements to the 3 active coys. You'll need to see his service record to see which unit(s) he actually served in.
Right now, anyone can search 1921 - images are free if you go via: http://search.ancestry.ca/search/db.aspx?dbid=8991

This looks like Caroline's folks, so Thos & Eliz Parkinson must have adopted her, I uppose.

I think I have it all sorted now except for Caroline Stringer Parkinson. MGNV kindly gave me reference to her marriage to Charles COWMAN and a further reference, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDZ8-B2T to what looks like another marriage. Her birth date isn't quite right and she says she is a spinster and calls herself Carrie. I can't find a death record for Charles so I am not quite sure on this one. Anyway thanks again for everyone's help.

Since one had 6 weeks to rego a birth, and 1 week is typical, this is entirely compatible with a birth in the last week of June. Carrie's dob is given as June 1887 in 1911, and her b'day occurred after the census was taken. It was taken on 6-7/6/1911, but was supposed to reflect the status on 1/6/1911 - the census nominal day.
A search at http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/ for rg11/4007 - the 1881 piece # - shows the subdistrict for the census: Registration Sub-District 4J St George - same as 1891, and helps tie the 1887 birth record to this family.
No idea why she's adopted - adoptees are usually family members, but I see no obvious connection. She definitely lists Thos & Eliz as her parents for her marr to Cowman.

It was the second marriage I was more confused about. Here her age in 1914 is given as 23 which makes her dob as 1891. All other details agree, parents etc but she is shown as a spinster and I can't find a death record for her first husband so maybe she was divorced.

Divorce didn't happen for any but the seriously wealthy
If she was calling herself a spinster, she'd either dumped her husband, or he'd dumped her
Any legal second marriage would have been in her first married name.....NOT her birth name
Who is Caroline Stringer Parkinson?

Caroline Stringer PARKINSON was the adopted daughter of Thomas PARKINSON. She married Charles COWMAN in 1910 and then appears to have married again in 1914 but some details don't quite gel.

Clearly she's lying abt her age - on 2/7/1914 she just had her 27th b'day, and Ed was only 21. Note that 7 y (but for a month) later, Ed is 28 and she is 33, just coming up to her 34th b'day.
In those days, there was no uniform divorce law in Canada. In BC, until 1968, divorce was governed by the English Matrimonial Causes Act, 1857.

Re Cowmans: Father Geo d 1910q4. In March 1911, mother Agnes & 4 of her kids (Mary E, John Joseph, Henry, Edith A) sailed from Liverpool to St John NB. Chas L had made the same trip 3 y earlier, also on the Empress of Britain in March. I think bro George came in 1909. Anyway, all the rest went to Hamilton Ont.

It seems our Charles went back there, whether to settle, or just for a visit wil remain a mystery.
