Hi JoonieCloonie

Thanks for the information. When Mary Dafforne married John Barling in 1773 the witnesses were James and Benjamin Dafforne - possibly her elder brothers? In 1795 a John Dafforne died, was buried in Chatham on 5 July and left a will mentioning niece Mary, wife of John Barling. The will was proved 10th August, 1795, at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.

All the information points to Mary being the child of a brother of John Dafforne or the illigitimate daughter of a sister of John. Therefore the parents of John must be the grandparents of Mary. Until further records are transcribed I will have to make do with trying to trace back to her grandparents.

All thoughts, ideas, opinions, clues or even information will be very gratefully received!

Looking for Dafforn(e)s in Chatham at familysearch, we may see siblings of Mary, and they could lead to parent info.

https://tinyurl.com/yc5uegxq

There are births to James Dafforne and Margaret, and marriages of those children.

baptisms to that couple in Chatham:

Ann 1730
John 1731
Middlemore James 1736
Humphrey Benjamin 1743
John Reddick 1744 (possibly actually Keddick/Kiddick?)
Margaret 1746
Elizabeth Kiddick 1748

On the other hand there were baptisms of children of Joseph and Anne in Chatham:

James 1730
Ann 1733
Joseph 1734
Sapience 1735
Benjamin 1740

One would think that with all those recorded baptisms, Mary would have shown up somewhere!

Fathers James and Joseph certainly look like brothers. Might they have married before settling in Chatham, and had older children in the place of marriage?

Before that generation the surname seems to be localized in Warwickshire with a little spillover to Gloucestershire and Staffordshire.

Jacqueline Report 28 Dec 2017 15:51

Yet more - have now found John Barling's baptism, the marriage of his parents Henry Barling and Martha Housely in Rochester, Kent, on 7th May, 1749 and also the baptism of his mother Martha in the dockyard church, Sheerness, 6th Jan. 1730. Martha's baptism gives her parents as Douglas Housely and Ann Wiles. They married 24th Dec. 1725 in St. Margaret's, Canterbury. Douglas, a sail maker, died in 1732, and was buried in Minster, Kent.

All I need now is Mary Dafforne's birth, and the birth of Douglas Housely and Ann Wiles.

Will all this ever end? I do hope not!

At long last another small step:-

From FreeReg -

30th November, 1812. - St. Mary Magdalen, Gillingham, Kent.

John Jackson, batchelor, OTP

Phoebe Caroline Barling, spinster OTP

witnesses - John and Mary Hastings

Now need to find birth of Phoebe's mother Mary Dafforne and father John Barling and also find out who the witnesses were.

Once again many thanks for all your help and just keep searching.

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 18 Nov 2015 22:37

Wow, many thanks for all the additional information! Both the happy couple and their witnesses seemed to be literate, perhaps a little unusual at that time.

From various trees on Ancestry both John and Mary Barling died in 1805 but there is no source given for these facts. The parents of John are recorded as Henry Barling and Martha Housely but once again no source is given.

Cannot yet find a birth for Mary Dafforne but having traced Phoebe Caroline with only the crossed out name on her marriage record and the "Daffen" as the fourth name of her eldest daughter to the Brigden marriage anything is possible.

Many thanks again for all the help.

JoonieCloonie - It's probably on Medway CityArk.

My previous post highlighted the wrong Church. It's the one in Chatham, not the Rochester one

The PR for the diocese of Rochester are being transcribed for Freereg.co.uk.
It's a fantastic finding-tool and gives far more detail from the images than Familysearch.

http://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/new

Both freereg and MCA are free to use without the need to register.

To the left of the page is a subheading Parish Registers on line

Find the listing for Rochester, Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary
Then the correct record set
Its possibly amongst

EDIT....EDIT

Wrong church mentioned above.
The one you need to look at on Medway CityArk is
Chatham, St. Mary the Virgin CMB 1568-1974

Firstly, many many thanks to Joonie Cloonie! From her suggestion of the name BARLING I started looking at the Barling family and found the following on a submitted tree on Familysearch.org:-

11th September, 1773, St. Nicholas, Rochester, Kent, England, the marriage between
John Barling and Mary DAFFORNE

There is also more information regarding John's ancesters.

Just keep on searching - never give up - they are all there somewhere!

Once again - thanks

For info. about 'recommender':

Women were admitted in the last month of their pregnancy - they were only permitted to stay for three weeks - and needed a letter of recommendation from a subscriber (patients were not charged by the Hospital) and an affidavit of their marriage and their husband's settlement.

Lying- in hospital record is on ancestry.

Still wondering what "Settlement : New Castle " meant in hospital records.

Is this where Phebe is from or where she was going after discharge

and what is " Recommender : Sarah Dolby " all about ?

JoonieCloonie Report 13 Apr 2014 17:23

just to stick my oar in, could anyone else read the name on the marriage record as BARLING ?

Name: Phebe Caroline Barling
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 08 Jan 1797
Christening Place: Chatham, Kent, England
Father's Name: John Barling
Mother's Name: Mary
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C02178-8

brother Nathaniel Joseph 1794
... actually possibly numerous other children 1776 to 1797 in Chatham

wrong area though ... but possibly a place to have met a seaman perhaps in the navy?

however several people have both this Phoebe and this Nathaniel and the others in their trees here at genesreunited

I'm actually tempted to read it as Anthony :-)

I suspect Phoebe Barbey is Barber

Joseph Barber and Catherine had other children baptised 1801, 1808, 1810 in Lambeth

also for info re son John Lloyd Jackson

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JM4G-VFJ

has dob as 3 April 1818, christened 4 July 1821

whereas Mary Daffen Jackson was born 17 August 1819 and christened 25 December 1820

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J39D-668

unusual for the child born earlier to be christened later ?

possibly John Lloyd was not a son of John Jackson and Phoebe took the opportunity to christen him after John's death ... although still why not at the same time as Mary?

ah ... the christening of Mary at the lying-in hospital would likely be because the child was not expected to live, I think - a 'private christening'

christenings were not supposed to be re-done in that case but many were
