1861 census shows Ellen , 1871 census shows Ellyn.

I have not been able to find a birth under both those names. The only one I could see was Elinor!

I would very much like some help in finding a possible marriage or death. She is not with her family on 1881 census so had she survived she would have been 26 at that time.

The birth you found could very well be her. Ellen and Ellyn are common diminutives for Elinor.

Alexander and Mary appear to have married in Greenwich RD and the other 2 children's births registered there. I cannot see an Elinor/Eleanor Lindsay in the 1861 census nor a death between 1855 and 1861. So I would suspect the Elinor birth.

If you order the certificate for Elinor from GRO and say you don't know the reference number then there is the option to complete parents details. If incorrect then the certificate will not be despatched to you and your money will be refunded I believe.

Depends who the informant was, Rose, and whether they knew the spelling of her birth name.
Or maybe the registrar's idea of how it should be spelled.

From FMP - a mixture of Ellen/Ellyn and Linzey/Lenzer as per the 1871 from Argylgran. Really does show how names were distorted, no wonder some can never be found!! At least Alexander's age was as per original.

Alexander Lindsay (think he was born Patrick A) his mother appears to have mixed up their ages on the 1881 census! Havent been able to find them since.
