OK - it's a new day in South OZ - Tuesday. After spending many hours I've been unable to locate a birth entry for Adam Dyson MORTON. He is with his parents on the 1880 census:
Adam D. Morton
Son
United States Census, 1880
birth: 1874 Canada
residence: 1880 Flint, Genesee, Michigan, United States

His marr. entry:
Name Adam Dyson Morton
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 28 Apr 1903
Event Place Brampton, Peel, Ontario, Canada
Age 28

and his Death Cert has:
Name: Adam Dyson Morton
Death Date: 30 Mar 1938
Death County or District: York
Age: 63
Gender: Male
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1875

We have proven that
Herbert Adam MORTON was b. 10 May 1874
Adam Dyson MORTON was b. between May 1874 & when brother
Charles Joe Forese MORTON on 1 Nov 1876 all . Brampton ONT CAN

So we have a window of between Feb 1875 & Feb 1876.

Adam Dyson MORTON was living in Michigan until his father (Robert Edward MORTON) died in 1891 when he returned to Brampton CAN and lived briefly with his Uncle (James Alexander MORTON). Would he have been on the USA SSI (Social Security Index)? If so, are we able to access it and what info would it give re birthdate?

Clutching at straws - and still looking for a living relative.....

Herbert and Adam are the one and same person!

Name: Adam Dyson Morton
Mother: Sarah Morton
Father: Robert Morton

I have been looking at this for a possible death for Robert E Morton?

Can't see this person on any records in the area of MI, thinking the R has been mistranscribed to an 'L'

Maybe the informant entered the wrong details (in respect of his marital status) at the registration of his death?

I agree with Gins that Herbert Adam became Adam Dyson. One wonders why and where did the name Dyson come from?

Glenys Report 18 Mar 2014 11:16

Thanks for mgnv for supplying Directory info
and to Gins - Robert Edward MORTON d. A April 1891 and is in the Glenwood Cemetery in Flint, Genesse MI. Found him there yesterday on FindaGrave:
Morton, Robert E 119706229
b. Jun. 2, 1850 d. Oct. 7, 1891 Glenwood Cemetery
Flint
Genesee County
Michigan, USA

and his wife Sarah Jane MORTON is in the same cemetery.

Why a name change from Herbert Adam MORTON to Adam Dyson MORTON? Would his (1891) death cert. give his date of birth rather than just his age? Curious as I cannot locate his death Herbert's cert. or any other info on him.

Adam Dyson MORTON youngest sibling, Joy Fay MORTON was just 4 years of age when her mother died and 6 when he father died and is enumerated with her Uncle back in Brampton in the 1891 census.

Would there have been a naturalization cert. issued? Canada / America and then America / Canada??

still looking for a living relative.....

I'm totally confused over your last post :-S

'Why a name change from Herbert Adam MORTON to Adam Dyson MORTON? Would his (1891) death cert. give his date of birth rather than just his age? Curious as I cannot locate his death Herbert's cert. or any other info on him'

Herbert Adam Dyson Morton died in 1938

I should have checked the 1901 I posted more carefully:
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/1901/z/z002/z000071544.pdf
As Gins has pointed out, there was no John G W Morton - he's really just a figment of the AG transcriber's making.

Re naturalization - it probably never happened.
On a technical note, pre-formation of the British commonwealth, there was no Canadian citizenship (nor Oz citizenship). Responsible colonies (like Canada, Oz, NZ, S Africa, Newfoundland) had citizenship courts, but these courts could only award British citizenship pre-commonwealth. Post-commonwealth, the Canadian courts could only award Canadian citizenship. There was a delay in legislation which left some Canadians stateless - they're still in this limbo. As you might infer, the Canadian government can be very frustrating - actually, frustrating enough to provoke 3 armed rebellions (1 successful). The first failed, and the ringleaders were transported to Oz dans un paysage étrange, to an area just outside of Sydney now known as Canada Bay (I think).

British citizenship thru the early 1970s depended solely on the citizenship of the father - the mother didn't count.

Early morning of 19th here!

Thanks all for your input in this MORTON chase, we now seem to be going over some things again (and maybe getting the issue of the 2 brothers confused).. Sometime later this morning I'll repost this Family Tree with all the updates.

John G. W. MORTON has been found in the 1901 Census:

Gins - a dob 0f 12/11/1882 would give ages of 8/18 on the census, which is what we see. A dob of 12/3/1882 should give ages of 9/19. CAN YOU CHECK THE IMAGE on the b.cert, paying heed to any adjacent registrations if they're organized that way.

Gee

Gee Report 19 Mar 2014 17:27

The DOB is as the above: 12 March 1882, registered 27 Nov 1882

The name on the image is: Morton Woods Morton

I presume that census information in Canada is only as reliable as the information given, as here in the UK.

Ages are more often than not, out by a year or two, or even more

mgnv

mgnv Report 19 Mar 2014 22:15

Gins - thanks for doing that.

Your presumption is correct. However, it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to find stated dob's in Canada - one can find them on b.certs, d.certs, gravestones, 1901 census, 1911 census (but day is missing - just month given), WW1 attestation papers. As you say, the age is often out by a year or 2, but it is very unusual to find the b'day changing (apart from the tear).
